SERGE: DELICATE CYCLE

After another exhausting shift, Serge finds himself at the laundromat, waiting for his clothes to finish washing. He doesn't mind the wait. In fact, he rather enjoys it. The familiar hum of the washing machines, the steady rhythm of their spinning drums, and the simple pleasure of having a little time to himself. Beside him lies a small, worn drawing from his daughter. “For Daddy” He looks at it and remembers those summers by the lake. Every year, they would pack their tents, fishing rods, and everything they needed to spend a little time away from the world. He remembers the sound of her laughter, the smell of meat cooking over an open fire, the tall pine trees surrounding their campsite, and the air so clean it almost tasted different. Those were beautiful days. He's glad she never had to see him during his final days. So thin, so sick, so helpless. He wouldn't have wanted that to be her last memory of him. Here, in THE AFTER, he's grateful that his own body no longer causes him suffering. And even more grateful that he can now help others find relief from their physical ailments. There's something deeply comforting about being able to ease someone else's pain. Especially when you know what it's like to suffer. The washing machine keeps spinning. Serge glances at the little drawing beside him. And smiles.
