船づくりで知られた牛窓のことをぱらぱら読んでいたら、船に使う木材は宮崎から運んでいたらしい。大昔から原材料は遠距離移動して生産地はまた別にあったというところが腑に落ちた。ある場所に特定の産業が発達したのは材料がそろっていたため的な説明は胡散臭く怪しい。うちの市内に船木という地区があり、文字通り船に使う木材を切り出したことからその名がついたらしい。ただこのあたりで船をつくっていた形跡はない。牛窓で当地向けの船をつくっていた記録があるのも興味をそそる。
