Working on #Contraptioneer, a #FreeSoftware #game https://contraptioneer.org/ Interested in #GameDev, #OpenHardware, #DIY, and curious to discover more! Living in France. Also on Mastodon @youen@mastodon.gamedev.place https://ko-fi.com/youen_

Virtual dust is more fun than real-life dust 😉 This custom #shader just mixes dust textures (albedo/roughness/normal map) with the regular material textures. It does so based on the configured dust amount, but also based on surface orientation (more dust on horizontal surfaces) #GameDev #Godot

I need your help, #gamedev friends! I am trying to come up with a drink pouring interaction for flat screen to match the one I already have in VR and I need examples of this done well in other games. Do you know of any immersive games where you can pour/spill/mix drinks that aren't VR exclusive?

A thread on Era about light modes and dark modes in web sites made me want to finally illustrate why I can't use dark modes even though I recognize they're generally more popular.

White text on a black background, with a lot of horizontal blur applied on top of it. The text reads:

This is what reading text in dark mode looks like to me. After a few seconds of scanning back and forth while reading through a paragraph, the bright text begins to imprint on my eyes and it makes it extremely difficult to see what I'm looking at. At that point, I basically can't read anymore. It's like if you've ever tried to look at a screen after having your eyes dilated by your optometrist. You just can't do it. It sucks, and while I respect anyone who prefers dark modes, I'd like for sites to default to light if they're not going to offer both (I'm looking at you, Unreal Engine documentation).

My next task for the #game is... to think about what the next tasks are 😁 My focus is to release a first playable version. What is mandatory for that? What can wait for later? What do you think, what would you want first? #GameDev #GameDesign #IndieGame

Hello, I'm Youen, game developer! I like to tinker with stuff, #DIY, electronics and software. I'm currently working on a personal project, #Contraptioneer, a construction game with a focus on designing functional mechanisms and machines from generic parts. #Introduction #GameDev #IndieGame #Maker

I've managed to make the game run at 30fps on my reference hardware (a 10 years old laptop with a GTX 850M) I had to sacrifice some of the rendering quality though (right image) Now I need to create an options menu so that you can adjust quality for your hardware. #GameDev #Contraptioneer

Screenshot of a game, on top of a hill covered with grass, with a few trees casting shadows, under a blue sky. In the distance we see a few kilometers of forest extending to the see at the horizon.Exactly the same screenshot but with different quality settings. Grass is less dense and less smooth. Shadows are less detailed. The image is overall more blurry.

Does English have a word for #DIY? In french we have for example "bricolage". A dictionary gives me "handiwork" but I'm not sure it's the same meaning, and also seems rarely used?

Images are often very important for video games. Be it nextgen 3D techniques, or stylized, retro, pixel art, it's very important. It's an integral part of what game developers do. We have to be good at that, right? Anyway... how do you choose your profile picture, already? 😅 #GameDev #PleaseHelp
