There was, if I recall, a flat fee for the Graphic Canon. I get royalties off my Pynchon book however.

While this dichotomy applies broadly to an idea like "What world do you build? 'Relevant' dystopia or 'escapist' utopia/funhouse?" I think there's more to it than just reflect or distract: art can push audience's minds into a space where they learn skills and habits of thought that'll help survive.

What is it like to serially announce political positions that are trivially obvious to everyone you hang out with irl and then they go viral? Is that a fulfilling hobby?
I remember guys like that writing similar wishes to me, back when I lived in a city that was bombed by Russia on a regular basis.

one of the great sadnesses of my life is realizing you can twist yourself into knots and try to be as clear of a communicator as possible... and some people will just always be determined to feel resentful and angry at you and misinterpret what you say, no matter what.
