Wildfire smoke is blanketing the Pac NW...bringing unhealthy/very unhealthy air quality to many locations with air quality alerts in effect for the foreseeable future. This is all underneath a heat dome, with hot temperatures all week from Washington state through New Mexico.
Wildfire smoke from the ongoing fires raging in the Pacific Northwest is currently making it's way down the California coast, ushered into the Bay Area by onshore winds. BUT the onshore winds are also keeping the worst of the smoke from the Gann fire away from us as well! @kpixtv.bsky.social
A heat dome has been parked over the Southwest for the past few days, which has protected the area from the Pacific Northwest's wildfire smoke. BUT as the heat dome weakens, smoke from the PNW will trickle down the California coast, pushing inland by Tuesday evening. @kpixtv.bsky.social
Have you noticed it’s been more humid than normal across California? But also…somehow less foggy? SF observed the 10th most humid summer (so far) on record, LA the 8th and Santa Barbara the 4th most muggy in modern history. A big reason revolves around El Niño!

Hurricane Genevieve brewing in the Pacific is just one reason we've been dealing with more beach hazards...El Nino has a huge role, allowing more (and stronger) hurricanes to form. But the Full Buck Moon this week also has a higher pull on the ocean/water levels. @kpixtv.bsky.social

Hurricanes Fausto and Genevieve are not heading towards the US, but will still bring California beach hazards and churn up the ocean from over a thousand miles away. It'll also allow a heat dome to build over the West Coast, bringing some of the hottest air of the year by next weekend.
The marine layer rolling over the Marin Headlands and Golden Gate Bridge was GORGEOUS tonight, such a fun and dynamic look at the atmosphere. The fog is going to return in full force later tonight, but it should hold off long enough for most of us to see a nice sunset! Get outside this evening!

Tropical Storm Bertha Update: the system isn't going to strengthen or weaken much over the next 12 hours or so as it skirts along the Gulf Coast, continuing to bring tropical storm force wind gusts, storm surge 1-3 feet, and isolated flash flooding (especially for metro areas).
The Little Fire in Sunol is not so little...and if you live northeast of this fire, you're going to see and smell smoke tonight. Especially for Livermore, make sure to mask up for any evening activities or stay inside if you can. Luckily winds will not be a huge issue tonight.
Tropical AND monsoonal moisture is heading towards California over the next 24 hours!! Lots of clouds/humidity overhead...along with the slight chance of a dry lightning strike, mainly tomorrow as the heat takes hold. More comfortable, and breezier, weather returns midweek.
Tropical Storm Bertha has officially formed in the Gulf, just south of the Panhandle of Florida. It will bring widespread strong winds, heavy rain potentially leading to flash flooding, and potentially life threatening storm surge along the coast of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana Tues-Thur.
So cool to see all these clouds in the sky across California thanks to Tropical Storm Elida still well off the coast!!
Do you know what the difference is between a hurricane and a typhoon? They are structurally the exact same, the only difference is the location. A hurricane forms in the east Pacific, a typhoon in the west...but if a hurricane crosses over the IDL, it's a typhoon of the same name!

With the remnants of Elida heading towards California, do you know WHY the West Coast doesn’t see major hurricanes like the East Coast? Elida is currently breaking apart as it moves farther north, bringing us more clouds and humidity…nothing even close to an Atlantic hurricane’s impacts to the US.
