Urban cover shifted communities in urban ponds (fewer crustaceans, more rotifers), while garden ponds stayed largely buffered by surrounding greenery. Fish were the strongest driver in both pond types, with stronger effects on garden ponds due to their smaller size 🐟
We found 95 zooplankton species, including 2 rotifers new to Hungary (Lecane tudicola, Monommata arndti), in both pond types, and 3 non-native species only in urban ponds. Over half (58%) of species were shared between garden and urban ponds.
Garden ponds are easy to dismiss as too small to matter, but they contribute meaningfully to #urbanbiodiversity. Our new paper looks at what zooplankton live in garden vs urban ponds, and how fish and urban cover shape those communities. Check it out: doi.org/10.1002/lno....
Zooplankton communities and their responses to fish presence and urban cover across garden and other urban ponds
As cities expand globally, the ratio of artificial to natural freshwater habitats is increasing. While public urban ponds have been the subject of an increasing number of biodiversity studies, the bi...

Check out this quirky video I made about #garden #pond nightlife. Material is from the 1st week of our current survey in #MyPond, with my ⭐amazing⭐ team @metacomlab.bsky.social (...my best work so far as video editor... 😅) 🦡 Did you know badgers and boars sometimes take a bath in garden ponds?? 🐗
🤩 A few exciting highlights from the first week of our summer survey! (Sound on! 🔊) 📸 Our wildlife cameras are currently monitoring the first 40 #MyPond #ponds, capturing all animal visitors until the end of the month, so we're hoping for many more exciting encounters! 🐸🐗🦉🐈⬛🦔🦡🐾 #citizenscience

🌊 Our new paper is out now! What happens when an invasive omnivore gets warmer? We found that the mysid Limnomysis benedeni shifts toward a more ‘herbivorous’ diet. 🦐🌡️ More here: aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... @csabavad.bsky.social @zsofiahorvath.bsky.social @kratina.bsky.social
Temperature‐driven diet shift in an invasive omnivorous crustacean feeding on plankton
Global warming alters the physiology of ectotherm consumers, potentially making their diets more herbivorous. However, the relevance and generality of these changes remain poorly understood in a mult...
