Always a treat visiting Lahpet in Covent Garden, London. Fabulous Burmese food including their signature lahpet thoke (tea leaf salad), pe palata (yellow pea flatbread), braised beef curry and ohn no kauk swé (chicken and noodles in a rich coconut broth). 🌿

Been a year since my beautiful mum passed away. Have been thinking about her all week: her smile and her sayings and her big, warm heart. It's still hard to think she's no longer here. Lighting the yahrzeit candle, and thinking of the light she gave to us and everyone around her. Love you, mum. x

There are so many misconceptions about secure hospitals and the mentally ill prisoners sent there. The regular prison estate is not equipped to house and treat severely mentally ill people. They become more unwell putting themselves and the staff at risk.

Catching up with an old friend over a fabulous Lebanese feast at Fairuz. All classic dishes, and each one absolutely spot on - silky smoky mutabbal (aubergine dip), a stunningly punchy hummus, musakaa (tomatoes, aubergine, garlic), warak inab (vine leaves). Plus a beautiful muhallabia for dessert. 🔥

The manuscript for 'Friday Night Chicken' has now been submitted, and off to the copyeditor it goes! What an adventure all this is. Now celebrating with some homemade kuchen - a specifically Manchester Jewish bake, a bit like babka, laced with cinnamon and replete with a glacé cherry on top. 🍒

Made my great-grandma Beck's apple cake today. It's the first time I've ever baked it (road-testing it for my book!), but my late mum used to make it regularly, and especially at Rosh Hashanah time. It has certainly stirred up some very dear memories of them both. 🍏

Saying farewell to my Canadian aunt, before she flies back. It's been an emotive visit to Manchester, but also special to spend quality time with family. And especially over good food, like it always is at Lupo. Fried courgette flowers, tonnarelli cacio e pepe & their generous slice of millefoglie.

With a sky full of the sunshine that my mum once so deeply loved, we were again joined at the graveside by our loving family and friends. After unveiling the stone, we remembered my beautiful mum, her kind and generous soul, and all the wonderful and special things that she gave to the world. 🌸

Loved this rich, thought-provoking discussion on the diversity of Jewish culinary heritage, from Eastern Europe to Iraq to North London. Beautiful reflections on food as memory, identity, connection and resilience. Thank you Adrienne Katz Kennedy, Alissa Timoshkina, Helen Graham & Linda Dangoor!

Lots of family over to celebrate our oldest's 18th birthday. Cue homemade lamb shawarma (recipe via Ottolenghi & Tamimi's Jerusalem - always a winner!), muhammara (red pepper, walnuts, garlic, pomegranate molasses), my sister-in-law's tamarind aubergines, tahini sauce and lots of sunny salads. 🎉🌞

Back in London, and being a mixed faith family, we've got both Passover and Easter going on right now. Cooked a slow-roasted shoulder of lamb, with red onions, garlic, tomatoes, thyme and potatoes. (Diana Henry's fabulous Simple Greek Lamb recipe - our annual Easter ritual!)💐

My dad only started venturing into the kitchen during Covid, during which he discovered to his surprise a real love of baking. Now he's making such wonderful bakes as this orange almond cake he prepared for us this Passover, based on Claudia Roden's iconic recipe. Very proud of him, my dad! 🍊

Of all the firsts after mum's death, Passover was always going to be the hardest. The seder is a repository of intimate family memory - layer upon layer - where we reminisce over the words & ways of loved ones no longer at the table. Mum's chair was empty this year, but her presence so deeply felt.
