#WIPSnips Lucia and Lolanene have a somewhat awkward talk... (Excerpt from FHSD Book 1: Fly High, Sink Deeper)

She was even dirtier than before, and had a box full of various items in her arms.
“Hey.”
Lucia was confused, “Hi.”
There was an awkward silence, before Lolanene started speaking, “With Ol’ Rusty dead ‘n’ Nolar…” She sighed away a sob, “I couldn’t leave. I had nowhere t’ go, so… guess I’m fixin’ yer ship.”
Lucia stared for a moment, “You are aware I’m not going to just let you take it, right?”
“’Course I’m aware ‘a’ that, Lucia. I weren’t plannin' on takin’ it. I was plannin’ on… well… goin' with ya. Helping y’ get yer girl back. I know I was angry, still am. But not at you. I’m angry at m’self. I had the same ability you did t’ grab th’ Dawn damned gun ‘n’ save him. But I didn’t do it neither. We both fucked up. Ain’t fair t’ blame you fer it.”
“I’m not sure I believe we’re just… okay now. You beat me in the face with my own gun. I’m still bleeding.”
“I’m scared, okay? I scavenged with Nolar fer… at least a decade. He took me in when my parents died. He was th’ closest thing t’ family I had left. ‘N’ I watched him die. I just stood there, ‘n’ watched him die. You were in shock, you’d never even seen an annelloid before, let alone a whole pack of th’ fuckers. But me? I had no excuse. I just… froze.” Lolanene’s eyes began to well up with tears, and she stopped speaking.
“Lolanene… how old are you?” Lucia asked, gently.
“I’m 18. As of a week ago.” She replied, tears streaming down her face as she stared at the floor.
Lucia gently took the box from her and set it on the floor of the bedroom. She then gently reached out to put a hand on Lolanene’s shoulder. Lolanene flinched, but accepted the touch. After a few seconds, she unexpectedly pulled Lucia into a tight hug, sobbing.

Why should I kill for you?”
The High Archon smiled, “Is not the thrill of the hunt reward enough? After all, you do love to kill, yes?”
“I do… You have a point. It isn’t like I have any other plans, sure.”
“Excellent choice, Miss Diraithe.” Her tone changed, becoming darker, “But do be aware, this is not something that I will allow to be common knowledge. You will tell no one, not your handler, not any friends you may have. You will tell no one of our little deal. Tell me you understand.” The High Archon’s tone made it clear that this was not a request.
“I understand.”
The High Archon stepped over to the door, “Excellent. You will be called upon when necessary. There will be no further contact between us until such time.” She stepped through the door, leaving Ladiziar alone in the meeting room.

#WIPSnips Ladiziar asks a question... (Excerpt from FHSD Book 4: Stand Tall and Shatter)

In the few moments she had before the effect wore off, Ladiziar casually executed every convulsing guard but one, who she instead grabbed by the throat and shoved against a wall.

“Executive vault. How do I get there?” She asked.

The guard twisted in her grasp, “Fuck you. You’re gonna kill me anyway.”

Ladiziar threw her to the floor and kicked her hard in the stomach, “True, but we can have a lot of fun before that happens.” She climbed atop her and gripped her throat again, taking out her dagger and carefully sliding it between the guard’s helmet and the visor embedded in it.

She pulled sharply downward and the visor popped off satisfyingly, sailing across the room and clattering loudly on the floor. She leaned close to the woman in the armor, “You don’t want it to be fun.”

The woman had dark tan skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. She glared up at Ladiziar, “You don’t scare me.”

In book 2, Maria reunites with her ex-lover and formerly only friend, Alicia Grenik, when she returns to her homeworld. It starts out tense, gets happier, and then ends with Maria's attempted execution. So overall it went pretty well!

“Mirideth, suppose you’re correct. What do we do?”
<First off, I’ll need to make some… interior modifications.>
Maria pushed off the wall, concerned, “What kind of modifications? This is my body…”
<I’m simply going to reroute my sensor subroutines through your brain's posterior cortical hot zone, thereby allowing me to bypass the failsafes that are being exploited by whatever tech Kinekial is using to block me. Essentially, my perception will be your perception.>
“Excuse me? You’re going to hijack my brain?! I don’t fucking think so.” Maria was more than a little bit panicked.
<Oh relax, it’s not as if I’m actually using your brain, I’m making use of the dormant nanites embedded in it.>
“How is that better?”
<I won’t have direct access to or control of your mind. I will simply see and feel what you do.>
“Wait, how do you see now?” Maria realized she’d been pacing the bridge.
<Micro-cameras positioned throughout the body. I can see in all directions at once. Unfortunate to give that up, but needs must.>
Maria stopped pacing, “Why didn’t you tell me that?! It would have been extremely useful before!”
<I knew I had it. And I would have used it to help had it ever come up.>

#WIPSnips Maria attends Mirideth's execution... (Excerpt from FHSD Book 2: Sink Deep, Rise Higher)

Archibald Solema cleared his throat, then spoke loudly, in a deep, calm, measured voice, “People of Talar. People of Forsythia. Today, we gather to judge the one who menaced our world for well over a century. The one we thought dead a year ago. The one who corrupted our people, made them into false, demonic imitations of humanity, like this poor soul here.” He gestured to Arlena’s body as someone uncovered it to shocked gasps from the crowd.
“Today, my people, we judge The Corruptor, the former Empress Mirideth Kellian Asazlaiyn!” He spread his arms wide as he shouted the name of the former Empress.
The people cheered as one, a massive sound that shook Maria to her core. These people were cheering for her death.
Katherine stepped up behind Archibald, whispering to him.
Maria heard him quietly utter, “Heaven and Void…” and glance down at her.
“My people, I have just been informed of something bittersweet, yet miraculous!” He gestured to Maria, “This strange vessel you see before you, contains the consciousness of not only The Corruptor, but Lucia Carlena! The hero of Forsythia!”
Gasps erupted from the crowd, and a flood of murmuring began.
Archibald banged a small wooden hammer on the podium, creating a surprisingly loud sound. “Silence, my people! Our Hero has returned to us, after adventures unknown, her battle with the Corruptor taking her beyond the Void itself! And, unfortunately, resulting in the transformation into the twin minded vessel we see before us. One, it seems, cannot live without the other. And thus, today, it is with a heavy heart that I welcome our Hero home, and thank her, for her sacrifice to come. Join me, in honoring our soon to be fallen Hero.”

#WIPSnips Lucia does something she never imagined she'd do... (Excerpt from FHSD Book 1: Fly High, Sink Deeper)

Lucia’s thoughts were empty. Clear as she could make them. One singular concept, one singular focus remained. Contact Mirideth. She pulled all that she had into making that happen, all her emotions, all her energy, her pain, everything, into one word. “Mirideth.” She felt something like an electrical shock run through her as she thought that word. It had worked. For a moment, there was only silence, and a dull throb inside her head.
Then, ~Plaything? You know you’re not supposed to use your nanites for that anymore, darling. Wouldn’t want you getting hurt.~ Mirideth’s voice thundered through Lucia’s head, drowning out all else.
Mirideth, Niarith needs help. I can’t get there. We need you. Lucia felt her head begin to heat up. She didn’t have much time.
~Did you think I wasn’t aware of our current predicament? Why, it’s all I can do to keep myself compartmentalized from the mental assault she’s facing. The things they’re doing, Plaything, if you can’t get here, I can’t say there’ll be much of her left.~ Mirideth sounded genuinely concerned. Lucia was sure it was a selfish concern, but it was concern nonetheless.
Void-take it, Mirideth, you’re there, I’m not. Do something! ….please! The heat was beginning to become overpowering, if she didn’t break the connection within the next few seconds, she’d black out.
~I’ll do what I can, Plaything. I cannot promise more than that.~
Thank you, Mirideth. With those words she’d never thought she’d think, she closed the connection.
The heat began to die down. She’d done it, all that she could do from here, she’d done.

#WIPSnips Gray Team encounters an Intigrelt Forced Compliance Automaton... (Excerpt from FHSD Book 3: Rise Up, Strike Harder)

Some of the piled debris shifted. Maria drew her pistol. The others took up positions at the various columns. Something climbed up and over the barricade. It was clearly not human. It was a strange bipedal creature, two legs placed at the back of its torso, a rigid tail balancing it. It was a shiny silvery color, with two blue and red stripes running down the length of its body. It had no arms, and a bizarre tapered head that was mostly featureless. At the point of its ‘face’ was a short needle-like protrusion. On the back of its head was what looked like some kind of vial, empty but for a small amount of clear liquid.
“The fuck is that?!” Zeltrada said, no small amount of fear in her voice.
Maria lowered her pistol as the creature ambled closer to her, “This is one of our benefactor’s automatons.”
Olintorim stepped out of cover, “Think we know what happened to the troops here.”
Maria nodded.
“Uh, no we don’t? What does this thing being here mean about anything?” Telnina asked, kneeling down on one knee to take a closer look at the machine that was now standing impassively before them all.
“Our benefactor made these things as a non-lethal pacification device.” Lolanene holstered her rifle, “They inject nanites int’ yer body that take control of yer muscular system ‘n’ can move yer body without yer consent.”
Gray-Six, Rontonni, spoke up for the first time Maria could remember, “That’s what they do?! Dawn give me fucking hope I just thought they paralyzed people!”
“Wait wait wait, hold up here,” Rizoni said, “Are you guys telling us these things injected the soldiers and forced them to kill each other?”
Maria nodded, “That’s exactly what we’re telling you.”
The room was silent for a moment, then Zeltrada spoke, “That’s so fucked up, but kinda fucking awesome!”
Lolanene crossed her arms, “We were told they were just gonna paralyze any troops they came across. Good ol’ Benefactor neglected t’ tell us ‘bout the fucked up killin’ each other part.”

#WIPSnips Ladiziar asks a stupid question... (Excerpt from FHSD Book 4: Stand Tall and Shatter)

Helolak’s voice crackled in Ladiziar’s ear, <You need to reach the executive access elevator in the lobby. Now, you won’t be taking the elevator, you just need to get inside the shaft. Once you’re at the bottom, you’ll need to cut through the floor of the shaft. There, you’ll find a large air duct that leads from an industrial purifier into the Vault.>

Ladiziar whispered quietly as she stalked through yet another maintenance tunnel just outside the office space, still sticky from the fire foam, “How far down is the bottom of the shaft?”

<Hold one… Approximately twenty-seven meters.>

“By the rising Dawn, how am I meant to descend that outside the elevator?”

<Songbird, you’ve got a tether and descender. Should probably use that.> Helolak’s tone had more than a hint of annoyance in it.

Ladiziar winced in embarrassment, “R-right. Of course. Songbird out.”

“What the fuck is that thing?!” Someone yelled from behind.

Maria turned, and saw two merc guards aiming at her.

“Maria Lucia Velnarena, lovely to meet you.” She stepped toward them.

The two men opened fire, and her HUD lit up with warnings that her ablative armor had been hit on her left shoulder and her abdomen. Blair noted that the Countess did not say that she had captured Blair’s sister earlier. The Countess might not have Blair’s sister. Or if the countess did have Ash, then the countess might not know who she had captured. Assuming Ash was even alive at this point.

Did some things Ive never ever done before yesterday! I went to a hypnokink con, and while there I did something remarkable that would shock the me of ten years ago to her core. I walked up to a group of complete strangers, started talking to them, and made new friends. That is HUGE for me.

#WIPSnips Lolanene gives no fucks what Maria looks like, as long as she's there... (Excerpt from FHSD Book 2: Sink Deep, Rise Higher)

Lolanene had tears in her eyes, she smiled, “Maria… I thought you were dead. Niarith ain’t woken up yet, I was alone. I thought I was alone again.”
Maria tried to stand up. A cacophony of mechanical sounds erupted from her body as she did, but she managed it. She was tall, incredibly so. If she’d been standing beneath the catwalk, she would have nearly scraped the top of her head on it. Suddenly, she was hit by the realization of what one of the unfamiliar signals had been. Behind her, she felt a long, thin appendage, which she was able to move like any other limb. She had a tail. She swung it around in front of her so she could see it. It was made of segmented black metal, and had a blade on the end of it. She turned to Lolanene, her tail swinging back behind her, idly swaying around.
“You’re not alone. I’m here. I may be... different than I was, but I’m here, Lolanene.”
Lolanene didn’t hesitate, she sprung forward and hugged Maria tightly, “Maria, I don’t care what’cha look like. Yer family. I was gonna drag yer fuckin’ corpse outta here if I had to. So yer some kinda cyborg robot now, whatever, yer alive.”

Nikrianth was unfazed, “We have killed many thousands of enemy combatants this morning, Testriknilak. That warship had a crew of over eight thousand. Each destroyer has a crew of two thousand. Scouts have a crew of five. The deaths we have just caused are regrettable, and as I said, we will not do that again, but they are miniscule compared to the rest of the deaths we have dealt today. Enemy or civilian, they are all human beings with rich, full lives. I do not order the end of any life lightly. Remember that.”

Ryani felt anger flare in him, but elected to stand down, for now. He simply sighed, and turned back to his console without another word. He stared at the smoke obscuring the crime he’d helped to commit, and felt disgusted. …yet he’d actively enjoyed the fighting with other ships. He’d felt sadistic glee as he watched those FIC guys in the EVA suits dash for cover, knowing they wouldn’t survive. But… they were the enemy. He was supposed to feel that way, wasn’t he? He sighed again, he could fall apart about it all later. Right now, the lives of those on this ship were still largely in his hands.
