new thread for "the bloodsalt flats, a god's blood chronicles story", parts 1 to 4

part one. three panel comic strip. on the left is a boxy robot named millie. on the right is a black haired woman with a large beak named becca.

millie says "Nomads have been spotted approaching from across the flats. Would you and your new friend like to come along on the hike out to trade with them?"

becca says "I'll invite her to come along if I spot her. She has taken to wandering far to scavenge for food."

panel 2:
millie says "you got her yo quit "scavenging" from your kitchen?

becca says "Geo complains she nabs his food sometimes, but she's actually been feeding off the carcass of something big that washed up on the coast."

panel 3:
millie says "that explains why she's been looking so... "robust"! I hope she does come along, it will be a good opportunity to chat with her and learn where she came from."

becca thought bubble says : "... "robust" ?"

part two. basically the "title page", despite it coming second. text at the top says "The Bloodsalt Flats"

four characters walk on a raised white path beneath a white sky, behind and around them to the horizon is a uniform dark pink/light red plain, the titular "bloodsalt flats". these are surely the "flats" previously mentioned that nomads have been seen approaching across, this must be the journey to go meet them.

the four characters present are :

becca in the top left, a woman with long black hair and large beak, dressed in blouse skirt and shoes

geo in the bottom left, a small blemmy wearing pants and shoes

millie in bottom center, the boxy robot on wheels, towing a boxy cart. she wears a hat and apron.

gathy on the right, a woman of unusual proportions with long black hair, sharp teeth, sharp claws, and so on. she is the "new friend" previously mentioned

panel 1:

millie says "Gathy, you've been hanging around with us for a little while now, but we still know so little about you! How did you wind up out here?"

panel 2:

Gathy's head swings down into view from out of panel.
gathy says "Why question me? Tell about yourselves first instead."

Millie says "Alright, if that will help you feel comfortable..."

part four. three panel comic strip. the characters are still beneath the white sky and surrounded by the pink/red bloodsalt flats.

panel 1:
millie the robot says "I came to these remote regions decades back to set up shop and research how to reconnect ancient communication cables, remotely access any remaining intact satellites, or failing those options, launch new communication satellites of my own. Sadly the last is looking like the most probable course of action despite the difficuly. Over the course of my time in this land, I met Becca and Geo and premitted them to shelter with me."

panel 2:
becca the beaked woman says "My family was plagued with social and financial pressures, so I chose not to accompany them as they migrated to a fortified town. After a series of false starts trying to live with other communities, I travelled along the coast and encountered Millie, who allowed me to stay with her as I worked on my art and writing. It is still slow going, but more progress than I've ever made elsewhere."

panel 3:
geo the blemmy says "I was on the run from corrupt and unjust law. I came way out here because once you get far enough away they figure you're probably dead in a ditch anyway. Millie let me camp out at her place and I help her out with her little project as best I can. Finding things for her. You know."

(special notes: i know this violates your precious show dont tell shit, right? okay. would you want to read long backstory comics about each of these three? maybe or maybe not. am i feeling up for actually writing and drawing long backstory comics for each of these three right now? hell no i am not)

the group of characters are walking down a path together. In the foreground, Millie the machine wearing a hat and apron tows the cart full of jars of bloodsalt crystals and Geo the small blemmy walks next to her.

Geo says "Do you have music in you? Perhaps a tune would cheer up this walk back."

Millie replies "What a fine idea!"

panel 2:
Closup on Millie as she tilts her head back and begins playing music. The speech bubble here is a visual gag because it is a media player panel with a play button, pause button, progress bar, etc.

panel 3:
Gathy's toothy head emerges from the top left of the panel, saying "How!? How does it sing with many new voices!?"

Geo thinks "Good, she's interested." in the bottom left of the panel.

Millie turns her head and says "I'm merely playing a music recording, silly!"

Geo has let Gathy and Millie carry on up the path, they are away in the background now. Gathy asks "What is "recording"?" and Millie replies "A recording is a method of storing information such as..."

in the foreground geo has stopped walking and is standing in becca's way. Becca has her hands on her hips and looks down at him. Becca says "huh?" and geo replies "shh, a moment."

panel 2: Geo says "I'm letting them get ahead a little more. She seemed to get offended last time she realized we were talking about her." Becca says "Oh..."

panel 3: the view has zoomed in on these two some more. on the right, geo gives a thumbs up and says "very astute of you to pull her aside during the trade to pry answers out of her, by the way. Well done!"

Becca thinks to herself "I honestly just wanted to talk to her but i'll accept the compliment i need it for the self esteem"

becca says aloud "thank you for noticing"

Geo says "so? what did you find out?"
Becca thinks to herself "I hope she doesnt consider it rude of me to share what she told me..."
Becca says aloud "Well, she uh, implies she was threatened and coerced into the whole murder cannibalism thing, and then shared a silly story about her mom killing and eating god."

panel 2:
Geo turns and begins walking again. he must have judged theyve given gathy and millie enough of a headstart.

he says "So she was simply raised in a violent cult! Lots of that going around. Let's not fall too far behind lest it raise suspicion as well. Do you have any cult deprogramming experience?"

becca replies "no."

geo says "I don't have much either! so the problem remains tough."

Becca adds "Millie might have a like instruction manual on it in her old books and files?"

panel 3:

Geo, on the right, looks behind him by rolling his eyes backwards. an editors note type box appears saying "note: i did not draw his eyes wrong here, i have decided he can just do that to look behind."

Geo says "Good idea! Yet, what if there are no such resources? will you just wing it? what if she proves incorrigible, and a risk to our lives and limbs?"

Becca says "I will wing it if i must, and i don't like your tone or what youre trying to lead this conversation towards!"

Geo replies "I can only encourage you to remain cautious, and be prepared to protect yourself."

Becca seems to have become agitated, she raises her hands somewhat plaintively, and tilts her head back exposing an angry eye beneath her black hair.

Becca says "Why are you acting like it's going to be all up to me?"
Geo replies "I've become wary of her, and for good reason!"
Becca adds "YOU met her first! You brought her to me! I helped both of you!"
Geo finishes "Do you consider her a burden I'm dumping off on you?"

panel2
Becca looks downcast, and says, "she's not a burden, she's a person.
Geo looks to the sky and says "A person indeed! "you are what you eat", the ancient saying goes!

panel 3:
Becca raises a finger and says "It's a clear case of bad upbringing, in my opinion!"
Geo replies "It's a possibility! Yet that alone does not defuse the risk she poses! While you handle the gentle approach, I will prepare something for if worse comes to worst."
Becca says "You're plotting how to kill her!? Who's the menace now!? I thought you liked her!"

It's kind of sad that a lot of my friends don't like spiders or have arachnophobia, because spiders are definitely one of my favorite kinds of creatures. I think they are really interesting. Yeah, you can meet some pretty freaky ones, but they are generally just doing their own thing.
