Does Amtrak have legal authority to fine passengers for fare evasion like a transit agency can? That would be a good compromise: double the price of the current ticket if you get on without paying.

Amtrak has started checking tickets on the platform at BWI, at least when going south. This slows down the boarding process considerably. The conductor said it’s new and because boarding without fares is prevalent at this station.

Thought the same thing today when I biked through a two stage pedestrian crossing with a beg button in the median but the lights were timed only as single stage.

According to the Transportation Planning Board, only 0.01% of BWI passengers arrive to the airport by bike. Today, I plan to double that share.

Anybody who has a moment should spam the RAC public comment form with accelerated adoption of the 2027 IBC single-stair provision. Doesn’t matter if you enter it wrong, a lot of submissions asking for the same thing will get the job done. (And tell them not to amend it in any way!)

Now the question is are we going to let self driving cars do the same thing that buses and personal vehicles did to streetcars, or are we going to preemptively adapt to this new technology.

When you look globally, there are many more countries that consistently abandoned street-running railways in the postwar years than ones that retained them. The simpler answer is that technology, decaying infras and the zeitgeist killed streetcars everywhere but in a bunch of countries.

Why do we use design consultants for BRT projects in the first place? They’re really just repavings with some center or side medians. Do European cities do it in-house?

Big fan of McMillan Park! It’s the best adaptive reuse for a park I’ve ever seen. I haven’t looked into the data myself, but I’d expect average bus speeds to decline if you focus your bus routes on the busiest corridors and cut your bus routes on the less busy ones. This is a compositional shift to adding more service on slower streets and cutting service on faster streets.

I don’t think Abundance distracts from funding service. Transit Abundance is a national movement to get federal/state/city governments and agencies to adopt best practices. You need elite persuasion.

​I'll get some flak for this, but IMO the Abundance transit stuff is a dangerous distraction. Portland, the Bay Area, Miami etc face draconian service cuts that would drive away riders— for good. If that happens "I don't really care how much a [new] bus costs because you'll have nobody riding it."

I’m not sure how much these proposed changes would actually affect transit projects. Seems to be a big boon for greenfield but urban structures and parks would still be protected by Section 106. Historic districts might not be.

Even if you live in the residential area just south of the tracks, you can't actually walk to the station because MTA didn't build an overpass/grade crossing Person living in the house 700 ft away would have to drive 10 minutes to get to the Yaphank-BNL station. Would be faster to get to old stop!

This *might* be the transit behavior that routinely causes me, personally, the most annoyance.
