The US already got a do over. A mulligan. A second chance. Much of the world, especially US allies, were ready to write off Trump’s first term as a fluke. The American people’s choice to put him back in power—as a convicted felon, after an openly bigoted, anti-democracy campaign—showed it was not.

This is the part many Americans -- including the Bezosites at the Washington Post -- don't understand. Canadians don't see this just as a Trump thing. It's that America elected him twice, and the second time with an even bigger mandate. The problem we're addressing is America, not Trump.

it's come a long way, but video game romance has always struggled since the dating sim days to capture the complexity of dating as being more than than putting nice coins into the heroine until sex falls out

this is a big problem in a lot of video game writing, the inability to accept that a relationship may be better served by being honest or firm. except our problematic fave dragon age 2

They come from a specific human register — argumentative forum poster, rationalist-adjacent, "there's a lot of work being done by" as a phrase — that models absorbed from people writing like you. The causation runs the wrong way for you to have caught it from them. — I took 20d6 psychic damage.

I asked an AI if my Reddit posts sound like AI and I was roasted to death. — Short answer: no, these read as unmistakably human. But I can see why you'd worry, and there are a couple of specific constructions worth naming . . .

It seems like a design flaw that we have no realistically plausible means of imposing consequences on the people in our society with the most power to destroy the foundational principles and rules of our society

There's an asymmetry here, where Trump et al barely even pretend to be following the law or respecting the Constitution, and openly revel in how much they can destroy and steal, but when it comes time to impose any consequences on them, an innumerable list of objections must be overcome one by one

Yet another issue where every single person who touched it needs to end up in jail for us to have any semblance of the rule of law. You cannot have a functional democracy where the government creates a plan to literally throw away votes from places that don't support the incumbent party.

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.

1. This guy is a fascist, and belongs under a jail. 2. You gotta take the Ws where you can find them. As much as it would be great to, we cannot literally eradicate all Republicans from public life. You need to peel some off and promise them amnesty if they'll help you shiv the rest.

Statement from Gov. Mike DeWine: "I think we have to ask ourselves: is this really good? Is it what we want done to people like this being picked up and facing deportation? Do we want that being done in our name?"

in particular it also seems to be a case of “surely the same list of reasons why they weren’t supposed to have invaded ukraine will stop them this time” because even in the age of trump cannot help but assume thT *other countries*, at least, are guided by reason and strategy over ideology and ego

they're starting to get into the "we should kill the applebees managers and single-property landlords" territory, which also goes a long way in explaining why everybody throughout history with any stake in the status quo suspects deep down the socialists really just do plan to kill them all.

i genuinely fucking hate Luigi (a Elon-musk loving nepo baby) for opening this Pandora’s box of edgy faux-leftists who have never worked a desk job in their life celebrating the murder of anyone with a moderately successful private-sector career
