Next up we have @adjongh.bsky.social media hi will be exploring the effectiveness of brief trauma focused treatments for personality disorder #BIGSPD26

We need to focus on Adverse Childhood Experiences, says de Jongh. Using Shapiro's Adaptive Information Processing. A negative self-image like 'I am worthless' isn't the cause of dysfunction but the result of unprocessed memories. Treat the memories, shift the symptoms. #BIGSPD26

Why focus on trauma? Childhood adversity isn't just a risk factor for personality disorders, says de Jongh, it may be a central driver. In one study each ACE raised borderline PD risk fivefold. Emotional abuse and neglect were the strongest predictors. #BIGSPD26

Our next keynote speaker at #BIGSPD26 is Prof Ad de Jongh @adjongh.bsky.social on: The effectiveness of brief trauma-focused treatment for personality disorders. Can short, trauma-focused therapy really shift a PD diagnosis? Here's what he's planning to cover. THREAD below 👇🏽

1. Current treatments for personlity
disorders
2. The critical role of ACEs
3. Theoretical framework
4. A trauma-focused approach
5. Results of our RCT
6. Case conceptualisation
6. Processing the memory
7. Results of PSYTREC (EMDR and CBT)
8. Closure and questions

Childhood adversity isn’t just a risk factor but may drive personality disorders. A large longitudinal study (N=8,199) shows ACEs, especially emotional abuse/neglect, strongly predict PDs, ↑ risk for borderline PD ×5. Supports trauma-focused treatment (e.g. #EMDR), even without PTSD.

Oddly enough, it took over 30 years before - regarding EMDR therapy a relationship could be found between a decrease in the emotional intensity of a trauma memory and a reduction in PTSD symptoms over time. But no longer, because a new study has demonstrated this connection. doi.org/10.1080/2000...

We presented on the results of our brief intensive evidence based treatment of severe PTSD from #PSYTREC at #ESTSS2025 in Tbilisi. We showed that despite the rotation of therapists in our treatment model the therapeutic alliance is very good and remains that way.
