Aidan Horner
@aidanhorner.bsky.social
Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience. Co-director of York Neuroimaging Centre (YNiC). Interested in memory, spatial navigation and brain imaging. He/Him http://www.aidanhorner.org/
Earlier this week our kids were away for 3 days and 2 nights at a summer camp. Honestly it felt like playing life on cheat mode. So much more time for us to just think and breathe!
Went to see the Odyssey earlier this week. It was fun. I enjoyed it. That is all
Saw a dish recently that didn’t incorporate hot honey. Quite unusual.
Out of office is officially on! Time for a long adventurous break
📢 New preprint with @aidanhorner.bsky.social and @marwimber.bsky.social investigating how schematic violations shape memory for sequences of events. Memory Benefits for Schematically Incongruent Sequences Depend on the Type of Violation osf.io/preprints/ps...
🎉 *extremely* excited to share our human single neuron + movie dataset is out in #ScientificData! 📄 Human neuron activity during an 83-minute movie from 2,286 neurons and 29 patients 🔗https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-026-07955-0 1st public dataset from @humansingleneuron.bsky.social!🧵
Response to grant reviews submitted, which means it is almost time for summer holidays!
Check out the new preprint from the amazing @adamjcurtis.bsky.social! Memory Benefits for Schematically Incongruent Sequences Depend on the Type of Violation #neuroskyence #psychscisky #cognition 🧪

Just saw this banging preprint by a cool posse headed by @aidanhorner.bsky.social (I saw it because I follow @suttonprofessor.bsky.social who is right in there): "Cognitive maps are flexible, dynamic, (re)constructed representations" osf.io/preprints/ps...

🚨 new lab preprint! Research from @gordonfeld.bsky.social during his DFG personal fellowship to my lab many moons ago: Global structure of new relational knowledge networks is represented in retrosplenial complex, and node-distance in hippocampus www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Writing the first draft of a response to reviewers comments (for both papers and grants) is so wonderfully cathartic
Sat down to cut half a page of a grant draft and accidentally cut 1.5 pages. Now well under the word limit!
Nothing like having colleagues who are experienced in grant writing, willing to offer feedback, and don't hold back. It's often brutal but always super helpful when writing a grant. Lots of work to do now!
Excited to share that my first-ever first-author paper (w/ @atabk.bsky.social @AngeliqueDelarazan @zreagh.bsky.social) is now out in PNAS! Building a story to link two objects boosts associative memory and inference, but not memory for the objects themselves. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... 🧵
Active linking through narratives facilitates associative inference | PNAS
In daily life, we often draw inferences about novel associations from prior experiences. This ability, associative inference, is thought to be a ke...

the most realistic scene in Jurassic Park is when two scientists make a questionable decision — traveling to an undisclosed location with a strange man — on the promise of three years of modest funding
The Cognition Group in the Psychology dept at Exeter are at risk of redundancy because "basic cognitive psychology research does not align with the current priorities of funding bodies" If you think this is overtly wrong and misguided, please sign this open letter docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
