5 years ago, the #TPNW established a prohibition of #nuclearweapons due to their unacceptable humanitarian consequences + risks. Moving away from #nuclearweapons is today more urgent amid geopolitical tensions and even higher nuclear risks. @nuclearban.bsky.social www.bmeia.gv.at/fileadmin/us...

5 years after the #TPNW entered into force, the following still holds true: nuclear weapons do not protect us, they endanger our existence. Credible steps towards nuclear disarmament are urgent. The #TPNW, co-initiated by AT, leads the way to a world without nuclear weapons.

Glad to do this with the Mexican Presidency, a Country with which Austria has cooperated very closely on disarmament issues

Today Ambassador Alexander KMENTT (@akmentt.bsky.social) 🇦🇹 handed over his credentials to the President of the Conference on Disarmament, Ambassador Francisca E. MÉNDEZ ESCOBAR 🇲🇽. We thank Mexico and look forward to working with Mongolia as the incoming presidency from 1 January 2026 🤝

Today in 1987, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, the first to ever require verifiable elimination of an entire class of weapons (missiles only, not nuclear warheads).

A color photograph of Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and United States President Ronald Reagan seated at a polished wood table in the White House and smiling as they sign separate, bound copies of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Aides (standing) point to where they need to sign the documents.he front page of the December 9, 1987, edition of the New York Times featuring the two-deck headline, "REAGAN AND GORBACHEV SIGN MISSILE TREATY AND VOW TO WORK FOR GREATER REDUCTIONS." Below the headline is a large black and white photograph of a smiling Reagan welcoming a smiling Gorbachev to the White House for the signing ceremony. Several other articles on the front page relate to the treaty, including "How to Destroy the 2.611 Missiles," and "A Tempered Optimism; At the End of An Unlikely Journey, Reagan and Gorbachev Are Mindful of Differences."

Anti-personnel mines don’t bring security—they bring suffering. A new ICRC blog by @corduladroege.bsky.social & Maya Brehm explores why making exceptions for these weapons is a dangerous mistake. It's time to prioritize humanity over false promises of safety. blogs.icrc.org/law-and-poli...

Anti-personnel mines: the false promise of security through exceptionalism in war

Efforts to abandon the APMBC challenge fundamental precepts of IHL and undermine essential safeguards for upholding humanity in war.

On Int'l Mine Awareness Day, we reiterate our commitment to end the suffering of victims of anti-personnel mines & cluster munitions. We stand firm on the absolute prohibition of these inhuman weapons. Our support to humanitarian #mineaction incl. victim assistance will continue!

Devastating developments driven largely by two countries that have not banned antipersonnel landmines – the United States & Russia – are threatening international norms & long-standing working to eradicate these weapons, which predominately harm civilians - @hrw.org www.hrw.org/news/2025/04...

Backsliding on Landmines Endangers Civilian Lives

The International Day for Mine Action on April 4 is a moment to highlight the work of the thousands of deminers around the world who clear and destroy landmines and explosive remnants of war.
