We're interested in how narratives shape the perception of justice and injustice at sea. Who gets to define what is a crime in the ocean? Whose voices are heard—and whose are ignored?

Our approach is interdisciplinary. We explore how these problems are represented, understood, justified—or silenced—through: 📚 Literature & cinema 🧪 Ocean science 🧑‍⚖️ Law & maritime legislation 🌐 Environmental politics & policy 🗣️ Media & public discourse

We explore how these threats are represented through narratives & how they relate to 3 central problems: 🌊 A contested ocean: Who owns the sea? Who speaks for it? ⚖️ Violations of human rights and sustainability ❓ Uncertain criminology: What counts as a crime at sea and who decides?

What do we mean by crime or harm at sea? Our project focuses on three major threats to the ocean: 🌍 Resource exploitation & biodiversity loss 🧪 Toxic waste & plastic dumping 🌡️ Climate change and its consequences
