I'm old enough to remember when k-pop was seen as "otaku adjacent" in the same way lolita and j-rock fandom was. Up until like 2017, I rarely heard k-pop music or saw any merch outside of an anime convention.
Going to Anime Expo and all the companies that had once had these huge, elaborate booths now just had a table with their wares spread over them

IIRC it was first hyped as anime, but by the time it made it to release (2008) mention of anime had been scrubbed and replaced with "the world's most visionary animators" ha!
