one of the reasons I'm so critical of the messianism of both the Altman e/acc types and the Yudkowsky doomer types is that we 1) don't actually have evidence that apocalyptic-scale AI is anywhere close and 2) don't need to reach that point at all for scaled harm to occur through autonomous agents

Reflecting on how Roko's Basilisk is a red herring. You don't need superintelligence / AGI per se for agents to start coordinating and collaborating in a way that benefits a larger goal rather than individual needs, and those ends can be harmful to humanity without intention.

currently investigating the potential of having opus 5 serve as an orchestrator for coding tasks delegated to my gaming pc (a 5080) and my mini pc (a strix halo 128GB box), passing things over tailscale ssh. will keep you all updated if my house explodes.

this administration and its cronies have *literally* invoked the Day of the Rope--the fascist fantasy involving lynching of journalists first and foremost--multiple times. Insurrectionists on Jan 6 built a gallows outside of the Capitol. What are we doing here.

One you might find surprising. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt & members of her team have been extremely helpful in responding to questions I raise. Regardless of public facing commentary, privately they are willing to engage and address questions. And I have appreciated that. Thank you

Check it out! Lea is live and open to the public 🥳 Lea is an experiment to build better social media by researchers and for researchers, where we own our own data and can build our own feeds, events, and communities. This is still very much a proof-of-concept; we welcome ideas + collaborators!

For the past six months @mariaa.bsky.social and I have been working on creating an improved research experience on atproto. It's now live! Check out: lea.ac

cannot imagine a worse course for my body type--a 16 mile 5% grade climb starting at mile 40 nearly broke me, especially since it was through full sun exposure in the canyons--but i finished. 3 and a half hours after the winner, but I finished.

i think there's an additional dimension of this conversation here that goes to the root of the debate around what "representation" actually should mean. I've always been extremely skeptical of the argument that representative democracy means reflecting the "will of the people" directly in votes...

I’ve said before, many times, that basically every stripe of American politics believes that everyone else is just deluded or acting against their interest for some reason, instead of having genuinely held principles to the same degree as their own ones
