This new mascots law went into effect on July 1, and has a specific carve-out that allows K-12 schools to keep a "derogatory" name if a federally recognized tribe gives them written consent.
While other schools with mascots banned under California's "Racial Mascots Law" had their nicknames adjudicated months, if not years, in advance, Marysville High School is still searching for a federally recognized tribe to let them keep their state-banned mascot.
