1/ I first heard the name Jason Crews in 2024. A bill to add outside oversight to the juvenile justice system failed. A lawmaker said Crews’ lobbying was a factor. “I can’t think of a reason for not wanting oversight unless there’s something to hide,” an advocate said. 🧵

1/ This is Thomas Jarvis. When he was a teen, the local health dept found bruises on 80% of his body. The medical provider said staff at the Tennessee juvenile justice facility where he was held must have noticed the injuries. But the facility never reported it to the state as required. 🧵THREAD

We had hoped management would work with us to reach a deal on Monday, but they refused to compromise with our union. So today I’m on strike with my colleagues trying to fight for a fair disciplinary process, equal pay & protection against AI related layoffs. Stand with us by not sharing or reading

I take no pleasure in saying that I and my @propublicaguild.org colleagues are on strike. It shouldn't have come to this and i can only hope that seeing the overwhelming majority of staff walk out today opens management's eyes and convinces them we're serious about our demands.

WE ARE ON STRIKE TODAY! As someone who regularly looks at ProPublica web traffic, today's the only day of my career I want to see low numbers. We know our readers support our union. Don't read us today. We'll be there tomorrow.

We love our jobs and are proud of our work. But we need a fair contract — just cause, fair wages and basic AI guardrails — to do this work well. So we’re striking today. Don’t cross the picket line.

I hate that contract negotiations are not going better, but this is where we are. Today my colleagues and I @propublica.org are walking out. We need management to come to the table with more serious contract proposals that address our real concerns about discipline, job protections and fair wages.

If @propublica.org management keeps refusing to compromise, we are ready to strike! Contribute to our strike fund, if you're able, linked below.

Yesterday, 92% of us voted YES (w/ 99% participation) to authorize a strike if @propublica.org management refuses to compromise on core issues. We need a fair contract that will protect the in-depth investigative reporting that our readers expect. Support us: www.gofundme.com/f/support-pr...

It's simple — @propublica.org workers should not be replaced by artificial intelligence. Our contract proposal specifically says that generative artificial intelligence ("GAI") should not be used to replace employees. Management struck out this entire section in their response to our proposal.

Screenshot of post on X from VA Secretary Doug Collins. The text reads: @ProPublica is an extreme liberal news outlet that will do anything to make the Trump Administration look bad. But this week, the far-left editors there reached a new low by sending @VernalColeman to stalk @DeptVetAffairs employees at their homes. This creepy behavior will discourage good people from coming to work at VA. @ProPublica, please do better and stop letting your hatred of the Trump Administration continue to warp your judgment.
