Telecommunication. When my parents immigrated in 1990 my mom wrote letters to my grandparents, and had sporadic and very expensive international calls. I’ve also immigrated away from my family but we can speak as frequently as we want and instantly with great ease.
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.
1/ Happy to share our paper 'Still Instrumentally Inclusive' w/ @turnbulldugarte.com in @apsrjournal.bsky.social. Understanding homonationalism remains important. Recent events (Berlin) have shown how quickly LGBT+ rights can become instrumentalized in debates about immigration and Islam.

When the far right enters parliament, established parties go high on average. But right after a far-right speech, they answer madly in anger: in words, voice, and body. Joint work with @ankuepfer.bsky.social and @pluggedchris.bsky.social presented at #PolMeth2026 at Michigan State.
Very belatedly sharing this because the last months were busy: The limits of appraisal theory for political emotions is out in Political Psychology! @gijsschumacher.bsky.social, @mrooduijn.bsky.social and I ask whether appraisal theories of emotion work the same way in politics as in everyday life.
The limits of appraisal theory for political emotions: Evidence from two U.S. surveys
Emotions, such as anger and anxiety, play a central role in political behavior and are extensively studied by political scientists. However, political science has largely adopted psychological theori...

פעם ראשונה בחיים שנשארתי ערה לצפות באירוויזיון. השידור בבריטניה מונחה על ידי גראהם נורטון ולפחות הוא מצחיק.

Populist radical right parties (PRRPs) predominantly appeal to negative emotions, like fear and anger. But this is not the whole story. @prxjournal.bsky.social, I ask to what extent and why PRRPs add positive emotions to negative ones in their appeals to voters. 🍹🍸 🧵 doi.org/10.1080/2474...
A complex cocktail: reappraising the role of positive emotions in the appeal of populist radical right parties
Negative emotions are held to be at the very core of the emotional appeal of populist radical right parties (PRRP). Building on emerging studies that paint a more nuanced picture, I argue that appe...

A not insignificant number of British Jews will probably leave after not just yesterday, but the build up to yesterday To understand, ask yourself if you’d feel you are safe wearing Jewish clothing or jewellery on the streets of London or Manchester Then ask yourself if that’s a way to live
Louder please for the people in the back!
Antisemites pretending to be antizionist: “If the Jews that don’t live in Israel - and have nothing to do with Israeli government - want to be safe and not stabbed or attack in the street or at synagogue they simply have to denounce Israel 😘” If you want a formula for creating Zionists, this is it
Defending or dismissing attacks on Jews minding their own business in Golders Green - and therefore shattering a sense of safety for Jews living in the UK - is the exact OPPOSITE of how you make Jewish people think having their own country is not crucial to their own physical survival BY THE WAY
Do you understand how stupid you have to be to defend attacks on Jews because of Netanyahu’s foreign policy? Or because you don’t like Israel? Attacking Jews just living their lives will not free Palestine, it will not end the war in Iran or Lebanon - it simply is just attacking Jews you FREAKS
This makes my eye twitch When I went to my best friend’s wedding in December and saw the rabbi who held the door shut at Heaton Park shul - and thanked him for protecting the community - I doubt he’d have said it’s “a perception of unsafety” if asked I’m so beyond tired of this
"If you want to understand the actual threat that Jews face, just turn on the news today." After the Golders Green stabbings, @sarahsackman.bsky.social pushes back on Zack Polanski questioning whether Jewish people face 'a perception of unsafety or actual unsafety'.
Had a great COMPTEXT and an excellent time teaching text analysis for group appeals along side @dpltr22.bsky.social. As he said, the materials can be found on GitHub and the GroupAppeals Python package is available on PyPi
I had the chance to give a 3-hour workshop with @alonadolinsky.com on automatic detection and classification of social group appeals in political texts. Materials on my GitHub: github.com/dpltr22/comp...
