A.M. Boone is in marketing hell

@ambooneauthor.bsky.social

Black enby writer of trash (affectionate) paranormal romances and urban fantasies centering Black queer characters. (they/them) https://ambooneauthor.com/ I mostly post about cats and Kirby... with a bit of book shilling in between.

Roland's the youngest of seven. His mom died when he was ten, so he was raised by his father's family, mostly. He grew up in a tiny town in Mississippi in the late 1800s and it sucked. (especially being the only "girl" of the family, having a preacher for a dad, and racism.) #FirstDraftFall

Where did your MC grow up? Who raised them?

Y'know... not physically, but he probably should when he's off doing a phantom thievery. Would probably make it harder for him to get caught. Metaphorically, he does wear the mask of being closeted (even to himself!) for half the damn book. #LGBTQWriteAThon

Didn't have comparison, so I looked up a bunch of synonyms... Didn't have any of them (but similarity was one of them) so I went with similar. This was the beginning of Leo getting his ass kicked by a bratty magician. (don't ask) RIP. From 40-something trans dude phantom thief WIP. #WIPSnips

“Asshole,” I muttered.
He glared at me. “I could take away what muddled, pathetic magick you’ve sullied right now and leave you nothing but a husk.”
	“Go ahead.”
“Leo!” Void cried. “Stop being rude.”
Okay, I was probably being a bit too confident right now. But this guy was a douche who’d probably been born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He deserved to be taken down a peg.
Even so, my heart was pounding away in my chest.
He drew out a magic circle—it looked similar to mine—and pressed it out towards me.
I tossed myself to the ground. Even though Void said that transforming twice in one night would fuck me up, I still had to…
“Power of the Phantom Veil! Give me strength!” I cried, and in an instant, I transformed.
Normally, transforming twice in one night would make me feel like absolute shit. But I was so pissed off I didn’t care.

The image behind the text is a border that is dark blue with gold stars with a black background with neon blue border. An illustrated caticorn holding a pencil and writing in a book with a rose behind one ear is in the lower right corner. A different version of the same illustrated caticorn is curled up writing in the lower left corner

The MC of my #FirstDraftFall project is Roland Matthews, a 35 year old Black trans man living in the Deep South in the 1920s. He's bitter and has a chip on his shoulder from having to take care of his dying father after his siblings all fucked off/from dysphoria and racism. (cont)

Who is the main character of your #FirstDraftFall story?

Leo's terrified of getting got. If he does, the magic in his blood will go to his 19 year old daughter, and she'll have to become a badass phantom thief. (She still has chuunibyou, so she'd love it, but Leo doesn't know that, so it's a constant thread of anxiety for him.) #LGBTQWriteAThon

This ancient Greek figure from the 2,500 year-old Douris Cup looks uncannily like someone working on a laptop! 😲 💻 He’s actually writing with a stylus on a hinged wax writing tablet! The technology has changed, the posture has not! 😂 Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me

My photo shows detail from an ancient Greek red-figure kylix (drinking cup) of a young man shown in profile seated on a stool facing right. He wears a knee length cloak (himation) over his left shoulder, which is shown in folds around his waist and upper legs. His right shoulder, chest, and arms are bare. His dark hair is short, and he wears a band around his head. He is looking down at an open rectangular wax writing tablet which he is supporting in his left hand above his lap. In his right hand he holds a metal stylus pen poised over the writing tablet. The wooden writing tablet is hinged like a book and, from this angle, resembles a modern laptop. The figure is part of a scene depicting school lessons in ancient Athens, painted by Douris around 480 BC. On display at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

My main goals for the week are: - write 10k on 40-something trans dude phantom thief WIP - work on a piece for my fiction writing class workshop coming up - clean the house before the guy comes to fix the AC #LGBTQWriteAThon

For the world: pretty much everything. This is a historical novel, so I need to do so much research. The characters... the MC is a preacher's kid in the mid 1920s, so... more research. At least I'm a pantser, so I don't have to understand the story quite yet. 😅 #FirstDraftFall

What do you need to understand about your world, characters, or story before you can feel comfortable starting your first draft?

Didn't have foreboding, so I went with dread. Poor Leo (even if he doesn't know he's Leo yet.) I'd be freaked out too if I learned that if I got killed being a thief, it'd fuck over my daughter. #LGBTQWriteAThon #queerwriters

The rest of the week was boring enough, even though I had dread hovering over my head like a raincloud. If I fucked this up, Adrienne’s life would be over. She’d have to drop out of school, come back here, and risk her life to purify cursed artwork. I couldn’t—I refused—to have that happen to her.

Myself, mostly. I write the stories I want to write, without thinking about marketability. (probably why I made 3 dollars last month 😭) But if other people want to read and buy my weird little queer and Black stories, that's cool too! #pretendpanel
