Inspiring story—but incomplete. The article overlooks the fact that limiting scientific exchange is itself part of US policy toward Iran. Imposed war, travel bans, sanctions, and exclusion from programmes like Neuromatch make that bridge almost impossible to cross right now.

After meeting at an SfN social, neuroscientists Arash Fassihi, Gily Ginosar, Noga Larry and Abdulraheem Nashef organized the Middle Eastern Systems Neuroscience Symposium, hoping to build a community that can transcend political barriers through scientific connection. #neuroskyence bit.ly/4g0sZkk

The lab is at @fens.org, with 5 posters — spatial & auditory working memory, prefrontal decision-making, dopamine in statistical learning, and a 2-photon rat-brain atlas for BrainGlobe. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it this year, but come find the rest of the lab on Tue, Thurs, & Fri! #FENS2026

For many Iranian students, Neuromatch was one of the few bridges to the international neuroscience community. Iranian students and TAs have contributed so much to it. Many of us, including me, found neuroscience through Neuromatch. This decision by Trump’s gov is cruel, unjust and a loss for science

Neuromatch@neuromatch.bsky.social · 3mo ago

We have difficult news to share. Neuromatch's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) license renewal, which has allowed us to include participants residing in Iran since 2020, has been denied by the United States Government.

This is the first of many collaborations to build novel anatomical atlases. We want to expand advanced computational anatomy to new fields. If this sounds interesting, get in touch!

New NIU paper in @currentbiology.bsky.social, in collaboration with @neuroweiler.bsky.social and colleagues at the University of Oldenburg. We built the first anatomical atlas for the Eurasian blackcap. Paper: www.cell.com/current-biol... More details: brainglobe.info/projects/bla...

A migratory bird brain, the Eurasian blackcap, has been mapped for the first time using high-resolution light microscopy. The open-source software tools developed form a foundation for new brain atlases to be built for any species, providing a valuable resource.

Academic friends, It's beyond heartbreaking to watch what's unfolding in Iran & the region. A few of us drafted an open letter calling for protection of civilians & of educational, research, medical & cultural institutions. Please read & sign if you agree: sites.google.com/view/protect... #IranWar

Protect Academic Life in Iran

We, the undersigned academics and researchers from around the world, express our profound concern over recent military strikes on Iran, the retaliatory responses, and the reported impact on civilian l...

Last night, US/Israeli strikes bombed Sharif University, my alma mater, heavily damaging the IT Center, Philosophy of Science building, EE, and more. Trump spoke of sending Iran "back to the Stone Age." That is the goal of this war. Scientists worldwide should speak up against these atrocities.

... But I only study rats and viruses. They will come for you, too, in time. He promised to send the country back to the Stone Age, where there was no Institut Pasteur. Or maybe the war criminal has 'credible' intel that the Ayatollah was living under the institute...

The US/Israeli attack on the Pasteur Institute of Iran, one of the country’s oldest and most important biomedical and vaccine centers, is a disaster for Iranians and their public health. Destroying medical institutions that protect civilian life is barbaric. These are obvious war crimes.

More than any other time, this year it feels like we have to mark Nowruz. This year we welcome Spring with heavy hearts, but we still welcome it. May the turning of the season remind us that nothing stays frozen forever. With hope for peace, freedom, sanity & justice - Happy Spring, happy Nowruz🌱🪻

A Haft-Seen Nowruz display on a small round table by a window

These are the graves of more than 160 schoolchildren killed by US and Israel attacks on Iran. They say they are bringing freedom to the Iranian people. This is what that “freedom” looks like.
