“I do more than kneel in Sun Pools all day,” she said with a smile. Her veins thrummed, heat pouring into her limbs. When Elric swung at her again, her spine bent back like a reed on the wind, ducking underneath his sword. “You cheat by using the Sun Mother’s Light.” Elric’s brow glistened. His eyes narrowed at her, but there was a playful lift to the corner of his mouth. “It cannot be helped. It’s a part of me, just as much as your strength is part of you.” Elric rolled his eyes, tossing his sword up into the air and catching it in his other hand with ease. He pointed it at her. “I may not be able to ever catch you with my blade, but I wonder, dear sister, if you can land a blow onto me. Come, let’s see what you can do.”

Im a big fan of bittersweet endings myself! I love angst but i also like the angst to mean 6 Like I dont want my characters to suffer for nothing lol. So they get a little treat at the end for all the pain they endured 🤣

“Why does it reject me?” he said, annoyance curling his mouth. He pushed Damien out of the way and set a glare onto Anaya. “What did you do to it?” She fought hard to keep her lip from curling up in a smirk. Now was not the time to be smug. “Nothing.” “Figure out how to fix it.” The King stood and shoved the stone back at Damien who nearly dropped it when it scorched his hands as well. “Lock her up in the dungeon when they’re done here and post a full guard to her cell. Do not let her leave or talk to anyone. Bring me a full report tonight. I must now commune with the Creator.” Damien nodded, pocketing the Sunstone. The king swept past him and left the chamber. Remaining on the steps, Damien turned his attention back to Anaya, watching down the slope of his nose as the scholars continued to examine her. The warmth of the Sunstone waned from her skin and her shame froze over, leaving her cold and shivering. She peered at Lucien once more. He was back to staring at his feet. The scholars made more notes about her anatomy and physiology. They spoke of her body in numbers and angles as if she were a blueprint instead of a person. Graceful, they said many times over. Graceful and elegant.

Anaya’s most notable injury is permanent. One of her ears is severed during the story, an act meant as humiliation as much as harm. While the physical wound heals, the mental injury does not, and she has to nurture her wounded pride after having part of her identity forcibly stripped away #writesky
