El Niño is an absolute monster we have now surpassed the Super El Niño of 2015-2016 with peak expected in November-December 2026. We can’t truly know how significant the 1877-1878 El Niño was in equatorial Pacific clearly very significant, but this is at least strongest event in ~150 years.

The preliminary sea-surface temperature in the Nino 3.4 region just set a record 3.1°C above the 1991-2020 mean, but it's been very volatile. Best to wait for the 2-week window to pass. Conjecture: hurricanes are upwelling cooler waters in the Pacific, contributing to rapid SST changes.

Geoffrey Lean: 18 years ago, scientists drew up 9 planetary boundaries not be transgressed if the world is to remain safe and secure. Today they report we have crossed a record seven—with ocean acidification joining others like climate change and biodiversity loss. The only two boundaries to have

As of September 10th, the Nino 3.4 anomaly is now 2.94°C (preliminary) above the 1991-2020 baseline, setting the 104th consecutive daily record, a full 1.09°C above the previous record for the day, set in 1997. The Climate 8-ball is gobsmacked.

'This is now getting absurdly serious with the El Niño. The latest OSTIA SST data now has a peak anomaly of 8.1C above normal, with Peru reporting a peak SSTA of 9.5C. What's more concerning is that these anomalies are only going to increase over the next 10+ days.' David Schlotthauer [x]

Breaking News! Code: Hot! The Nino 3.4 SST-anomaly is rising fast, now at 2.89°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. The all-time daily peak (3.03°C, Nov. 19, 2015) is within reach in a few days. The Climate 8-Ball is sober, hasn't had a drink, waiting for the Jack of Hearts.

"Instead of giving up, scientists and UN officials recommend trying to limit excessive warming and then bring the temperature back down to the agreed-upon threshold. But it still will mean decades of increased weather-related disasters, rising seas, extinctions and melting ice and glaciers."
