"Rum raisin fanatics could hardly wait until the doors opened...Flavors are not merely named. they are followed by a full list of ingredients, One is made aware of the fresh cream and egg yolks used."--from a 1980 WP article, on the Georgetown Haagen Dazs where Henry Rollins worked.
I don’t think I can make it but somebody in the DMV probably needs to know that Pugwash Irishman Thomas Walsh is playing a rare solo show at Hank Dietle’s Wednesday night 8/5 at 5:30

I would never have revisited it if it weren’t for my wife and M-i-L, but after watching a lot of Lewton, seeing The Sound of Music on the big screen for the first time, and not seeing any Lewton in Mark Robson’s later career, I was surprised how much Val Lewton I see in TSOM.

If you love this you'll also love the images from John Wymer, who, in the late '40s and '50s, went around the District taking tons of street pictures as a hobby. His collection here is laid out on a Google Map so you can browse any part of the city to see how it looked decades ago.

Pertinent to Little House discourse because the og was pretty woke with one weird exception: Michael Landon clearly had a problem with the Irish
“Two hundred and fifty years may not seem that long when compared to a country like China or Egypt with thousands of years of written history, but to be fair, neither of those places ever had to deal with the Irish,” said historian Robert Garson

Come for the rogue’s gallery of Downtown New York; stay for the unlikely conversion narrative. My @spectrumculture.bsky.social review of Adele Bertei’s vivid, moving memoir spectrumculture.com/2026/07/19/n...

An impassioned musical memoir presents a rogue’s gallery of punk and Downtown New York figures, conveying all the thrills of that fertile scene without glossing over its myriad dangers.

Mystified by reviewers who don’t think GHOST SHIP (Robson, 1943) is horror. Such a deep suspicion of authority in the middle of war? Dix is so understated and ordinary that his weakness is all the more terrifying. Fascinating.

There are plenty of unforgettable images in I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE but what impressed me on a rewatch was a forgettable one: Betsy’s interview takes place in a room w/o mystery, except: it’s snowing outside, hard, which sets up contrast and theme with a subtle visual flair. A perfect film.
