I would never have revisited it if it weren’t for my wife and M-i-L, but after watching a lot of Lewton, seeing The Sound of Music on the big screen for the first time, and not seeing any Lewton in Mark Robson’s later career, I was surprised how much Val Lewton I see in TSOM.

Mystified by reviewers who don’t think GHOST SHIP (Robson, 1943) is horror. Such a deep suspicion of authority in the middle of war? Dix is so understated and ordinary that his weakness is all the more terrifying. Fascinating.

There are plenty of unforgettable images in I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE but what impressed me on a rewatch was a forgettable one: Betsy’s interview takes place in a room w/o mystery, except: it’s snowing outside, hard, which sets up contrast and theme with a subtle visual flair. A perfect film.
