I attended ICON 13 (Illustration Conference) in Baltimore this past week as a Portfolio Reviewer and let me tell you… Illustrators are amazing. Heading home feels like leaving people who uniquely understand your struggles and dreams behind, but being in that stew was ENERGIZING.

Self portrait in black ink sketch— me! A pale, heavy, curvy person in profile, wearing a tank top and pants and a conference badge on a lanyard, my short dark hair pushed back with a kerchief. Eyes are obscured by glasses. The words “leave some imperfections. It shouldn’t feel finished, it should feel made” are written at the bottom of the page Ink sketch of Zachariah Ohora, a man with a salt and pepper beard, large glasses, and a trucker style cap, looking to the side as he speaks, wearing a beaded necklace and a tshirt that trades “LEGALIZE telepathy” with two abstract profiles of people facing each other on it, a beam going from one head to the other

Talking with Gina and Maia was simultaneously humbling and energizing in the BEST way! Please enjoy this conversation about graphic novels, and how we can protect books and reading!

Pencil test and final animation: Tokyo Godfathers (2003), dir. Satoshi Kon, Madhouse This sequence by Shinji Otsuka was the first animation test for Tokyo Godfathers, and it served as a reference for the rest of the team

Self-consciousness about your art feels unpleasant, but it means your tastes are growing. Your personal taste as it guides your work is kind of an essential part of being an artist. Practice builds your skills and your point of view! You want to develop the Artist’s Hand *and* the Eye, so to speak.

This needs more attention: Zohran SPLIT the straights with Cuomo. ALL of his margin was from LGBTQ+ voters. Every Dem who ever said “we should abandon the transes” needs this shoved down their fucking throat with a ramrod.

Photo of NBC’s exit poll data (from my work laptop, lol) showing Mamdani splitting the straight vote equally with Cuomo, but taking the LGBTQ+ vote by more than 5:1. Even though the LGBTQ+ slice is only 14% of the population, they were a LANDSLIDE in his favor.

All vessels from the Global Sumud flotilla have been stopped by Israeli forces, W/ participants detained,w/ and ships confiscated. This raises urgent questions about the legality of Israel’s blockade and treatment of civilians trying to deliver aid. 🌍 The world is watching. #FreePalestine

Billy Bat is a comic about the love of comics. (And a thousand other things.) It spans decades and languages and styles, with so many cool details. Brendon and I talked for years about the ways it could be lettered. And swore that we would work together if given the chance. We are so grateful.
