We have the power to change the world for the better. That’s what our ancestors did for us. And that’s what we’re going to do for future generations.

In UNISON we are clear about the change that needs to happen: Repairing our public services. Real public ownership. Taxing the rich. And standing up for our values, not throwing migrant workers under the bus.

The working class has never advanced because the ruling class developed a conscience. It was because workers fought against hostile politicians, bosses and courts, and won. From my speech at the Durham Miners’ Gala.

I met Bridget Philipson yesterday alongside Ivan Bonsell of our Higher Education Service Group and @drjogrady.bsky.social of the UCU. We raised the funding crisis facing our universities, which is threatening the livelihoods of our members, and made the case for a comprehensive solution.

It’s hugely welcome that the Chancellor is lifting mileage rates – a longstanding UNISON demand and something I raised with her in our latest meeting. Frozen rates were punishing workers just going about their jobs. Now we need urgent action to drive wages up and bills down.
