A really thoughtful talk by Terence Tao on "Mathematics in the age of AI", which touches on many of the issues which I think are increasingly relevant for our own field. What is the real purpose of our work? Are we simply machines for generating plots/papers (for mathematicians, proofs)?

Multi-century cooling after net-zero greenhouse gas emissions - Nature Climate Change
How global temperatures change after net-zero emissions are reached is highly uncertain. Here the authors constrain this response and find that net-zero GHG emissions lead to multi-century cooling of ...

Really enjoyed this paper by Denis Shum. Builds nicely on insights from Jake Seeley & @davidromps.com in 2016 to show that increased cloud buoyancy in response to aerosol can only ever be a transient phenomena (because WTG ensures the environment will adjust quickly) www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Deep convection only temporarily intensified by aerosols - Nature Geoscience
A sudden rise in aerosols makes clouds more active for about a day. Then the effect fades as the atmosphere adjusts and warms aloft, reducing the contrast that helps clouds grow, according to cloud-re...

Countless scientific and professional societies in the United States have already issued public statements of alarm, and many have submitted formal public comment to the federal government--as have thousands of individuals. You can, too, directly via: www.regulations.gov/...
I just submitted my formal comment on the disastrous proposal to transform essentially all U.S. federal grantmaking--affecting every sector of American science, technology, education, & health--into an overtly partisan political process. Full text here: weatherwest.com/wp-c...
Your reps voted to maintain science funding, but instead the NSF is cutting many fields by 20-30%, and apparently using that money for "X-Labs." This great talk from @climateflavors.bsky.social on the 2026 Western US snow drought is the sort of science we could lose www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzOi...

Don’t forget to take action on the proposed OMB rules! Public comments, contacting your societies or environmental nonprofits, contacting your Congresspeople, etc.
🧵 Public science in the US has taken some heavy hits over the last year, but the White House OMB is proposing a series of changes that will result in a TKO for science as we know it unless we fight back. Here's what's happening, and why it matters. 1/n
Been wondering why NSF isn't spending most of its FY26 appropriation? A $1.5B tech initiative may be the reason. And big cuts to hundreds of research programs could be just the beginning of the bad news. www.science.org/content/arti...

Pressure works. Three days ago, I joined lawmakers pressuring the White House to stop its plan to dismantle a $368 million ocean monitoring system that is CRITICAL to understanding climate change and marine ecosystems, including right here off the coast of Oregon. Today, Trump backed down.
Precarious employment is a problem for academics basically everywhere. But it seems REALLY bad in Germany and Austria. In Austria, the vast majority (~75%) of researchers are on short-term contracts — often under conditions that would be illegal for workers not employed at universities. 🧪

Just going to drop this here since we haven't talked about NSF strangling geoscience for about a month. It's still strangling geoscience (and everything else) with 9% the number of grants issued compared to the 2021-2024 average. grant-witness.us/funding_curv...
