not trying to discount this, just throwing my own experience out there, as a 99er kids my age in 2004 were pretty open about it. the "tough, macho" performing kid in my class was in love with Fable. the girls liked Pokemon and Mario. i think were the first generation that Never Stopped being "nerdy"

WoW, GTA, Wii Sports, Halo finally moved the needle for video games, it wasn’t something you only talked about with your nerdy friends
