The 6 largest oil companies will collectively rake in $45B in profits in the second quarter of 2026 — nearly double what they made in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Canada, France, and Spain are battling record-breaking wildfires spurred by the climate crisis. Big Oil profits while the world burns.

Daniel Swain@weatherwest.bsky.social · 2w agoThe extraordinary wildfire outbreak across Oregon, eastern Washington, and southern British Columbia has become even more alarming amid critical fire weather conditions. Over 500,000 acres have already burned in OR & WA alone, and that number could be >1 million acres by Mon.
My advice to Canadians is don’t get on the back foot and attempt to defend our wildfire management across 3 million square kms to Americans. Get on the front foot and explain how decades of US emissions have contributed to Canada’s forests heating up, leading to more and bigger fires and more smoke.

The Canadian Energy Center says growing oil exports by 1.5M barrels/day **could** boost GDP by ~31B annually. Meanwhile, wildfire smoke health costs alone - just the health costs, nothing else - averaged 23B/year, past tense. And they're growing fast.

My most doomy take is that liberal governments were in fact serious about decarbonizing, but then realized that carbon capture doesn’t actually work and they would have to manage the devaluation of trillions of fossil capital, and they quietly decided that they would rather let the world burn. 1/2

As Amitav Gosh said, the climate crisis is a crisis of our imagination.

Right now I'm in the epicentre of the heatwave, in southwest France, where the brutality of the heat has ground life to a halt. And I have to keep reminding myself: this is only the beginning.

The UK had its hottest ever June day. The ground is exceeding 122°F (50°C). People are dying. Tell me again why we shouldn't talk about climate change???
Letting politicians override science and health regulations to push banned toxic pesticides isn't "elbows up" - it is giving the insider pass to the pesticides lobby. Prime Minister Carney needs to do better. PS. Europeans won't buy our produce if they are bathed in banned pesticides.
