The Economists have spoken. Poverty is manufactured embedded in a socially and ecologically unsustainable economic system. More than 550 signatories to date call on governments to adopt indicators beyond economic growth to enable human and environmental flourishing to dismantle poverty.

The Conservatives’ Alternative King’s Speech claimed the welfare bill is higher than income tax receipts “for the first time ever”. We’ve heard this a few times recently, but it’s not true. Welfare spending (including pensions) has been higher for years.

Welfare payments have not exceeded income tax ‘for the first time ever’ – Full Fact

Welfare spending, which includes state pensions, has been higher than income tax for at least 13 years, contrary to a claim in the Conservatives’ Alternative King’s Speech.

I still don’t understand why Belfast remains so poorly developed in walking & cycling infrastructure. With the vast longterm benefits, surely there must be a solid business case for investment.

“Copenhagen reported that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 & 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety & comfort of cycling.” #Copenhagen chose. They keep choosing even better every year.

Ask a techbro to make a business case for AI energy consumption: you’ll get an energy consumption equation from a hypothesis that human intelligence is the result of food intake. Alrighty Sam, you absolutely must eat for a good few more years. (… and the comments are priceless)

SAM ALTMAN: “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model … But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”

Despite sustainble developm. & green growth efforts, the research indicates fossil fuel combustion, industrial activ., land-use change & deforestation, are major force behind accelerating climate change. In 2024, global energy-related CO2 emissions rose by 0.8%. Can we afford more economic growth?

Let that sink in, we are talking about education providers which are in essence public service providers. So shrinking public sector services is very much on the agenda, underinvesting/underfunding education service in my book does nothing to the so desperately pursued policy on 'economic growth'

Chief exec of OfS 'said the OfS believes there are 24 institutions at risk of exiting the market in the next 12 months, seven of which are large providers with more than 3,000 students. There are another 25 or so institutions of various sizes at risk over a two- to three-year period, she added.'

How is this not the top story on every news bulletin? This has been happening for years and instead of doing anything to protect children successive governments have made the situation worse. This isn't just on councils. It is part of failings on a State level. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

A German word of wisdom: “Papier ist gedultig”, meaning as much as promises written on paper don’t mean much in themselves. Consumers better not take company promises at face value when actions are in contradiction of commitments. It’s the design/implementation gap also referred to as #greenwashing
