📢 New paper where we evaluate the process of how researchers edit AI-generated scientific text by analyzing the entire editing trajectories instead of just the final edit. we study: what kind of edits they make and when, how does it change the quality of text, and a lot more 👇
🚩 AI-assisted scientific writing faces increasing scrutiny Can human or LLM editing fix it? 👇 240k edits on scientific abstracts expose LLM writing flaws, and show that human editing fails to fix them cc Sanchaita Hazra, Doeun Lee, @shocheen.bsky.social, Bodhisattwa Prasad Majumder 🧵
New preprint and dataset, work led by talented PhD student Jonathan Ivey! There's lots of interest in using LLMs to conduct qualitative interviews, but we don't know if they work because we don't know what makes "good" interview. We analyze 16,940 responses across 343 interviews and find:

For the last decade, the pervasive spread of bullshit & manipulation of online platforms have been widely recognized societal concerns. Now non US citizens studying those subjects can be labeled “censors” & denied visas or deported from the US. Censorship, indeed. www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...

An internal State Department memo said that anyone involved in "censorship" of free speech should be considered for rejection.

New paper in Science: In a platform-independent field experiment, we show that reranking content expressing antidemocratic attitudes and partisan animosity in social media feeds alters affective polarization. 🧵
Led by @stolenpyjak.bsky.social, we built a user-friendly python package for generating and evaluating privacy-preserving synthetic data! See details in our EMNLP Demo paper:

🚀 Text anonymization is hard; DP often hurts utility. We use entity-aware control codes + either ICL (with bad-token blocking) or prefix-tuning w/ masking to get strong privacy–utility tradeoffs on legal & clinical data, outperforming DP-SGD in practice (EMNLP 2025). www.arxiv.org/abs/2509.25729

Our COLM preprint is up! arxiv.org/abs/2507.15715 tldr: we deployed a RAG slack bot and invited astronomers to use it. Through analyzing their usage and conducting follow-up interviews, we recommend better ways to build benchmarks for evaluating AI for astronomy (or science more generally)
I'm super excited to welcome these amazing colleagues!
