Another fantastic day at IPC15 in Frankfurt. Day 2 focused on taxonomy, systematics and phylogenomics. Interestingly it started and finished with the renowned sand striker worms, with the fascinating story of Walter.

Finally, footage from that new whale graveyard. The fact that fossils and fresh carcasses mix together in this spot is bonkers. But of course it makes sense, because the scavengers that live down there also need a steady supply over millions of years. They can't just suddenly adapt to the deep.

If you look at the @inaturalist.bsky.social world map of distribution Helobdella leeches are everywhere - except the too cold near-polar places. They are also good invaders - as obviously has occurred here. But behind the hype an interesting find nevertheless.

[New Paper] in Ecology @esajournals.bsky.social reports a remarkable limpet feeding exclusively on chitinous tubes of deep-sea tubeworms! Chitin may be key energy reserves in the deep.
