When you think about all the men and women who were detained and tortured for wanting a better future for their children. How they tortured them—using dogs to rape women, inserting rats into their vaginas, electrocuting them, and, once they were dead, throwing them from helicopters into the sea.
Pinochet’s dictatorship systematically persecuted, tortured, disappeared and killed political opponents. Chile also became a laboratory for neoliberal economic reforms. The coup and its aftermath sparked a global solidarity movement with the Chilean left.
Today is one of the saddest days for Chileans. On this day 11 September 1973, 52 years ago, a US-backed coup overthrew Chile's democratically elected president Salvador Allende and installed a military dictatorship led by coward and traitor Augusto Pinochet.
