What Exeter’s example has shown is that Departments that are excellent at research and teaching (the much vaunted dual excellence) and recruiting very well can still be threatened. Hard to believe these are not motivated by factors beyond the financial ones.

For further context: almost everyone in the Faculty of Arts is at risk of redundancy. Music, Modern Languages & American & Canadian Studies courses to close completely. History will not close but staff numbers will be significantly reduced. This is what 'right-sizing' looks like, apparently.

I went to see my son and his friends in the National Youth Orchestra perform this weekend. Many of the teenage boys (and girls) were in tears backstage- moved by Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. 160 teenagers playing their hearts out on stage. Felt a glimmer of hope after the relentlessness of 206.
