Systems neuroscientist. Assistant Professor at Cornell. Studying the computational and circuit mechanisms of learning, memory and natural behaviors in rodents

Our work on goal-directed theta sweeps is out! We found two different types of theta sweeps in the rat hippocampus. During random foraging, left-right alternating sweeps dominated (Vollan, 25). However, during memory-guided navigation sweeps pointing to hidden goal locations emerged with learning.

We're recruiting postdocs to study how people build structured knowledge from experience & use it to act flexibly. Behavioral work, fMRI, computational & AI models, with a lifespan focus. You don't need experience with every method; fit & curiosity matter most. Please repost & share! 🧠

Preston Lab, University of Texas at Austin. Now recruiting 1–2 postdoctoral researchers in learning, memory, development, and flexible behavior. Methods: behavioral experiments, fMRI, computational modeling, and naturalistic stimuli. Apply with CV, research statement, and 3 references to apreston@utexas.edu. Photos show the lab group smiling together, members working at a table, and members at a celebration.

We used rabies virus 👾 to map how #psilocybin modifies long-range circuits 🧠, revealing network-specific reorganization that we didn’t expect. The full study is now online at Cell. @cp-cell.bsky.social Paper 👉 www.cell.com/cell/fulltex... Thread for a synopsis 👉 bsky.app/profile/alex...

Psilocybin triggers an activity-dependent rewiring of large-scale cortical networks

Psilocybin reshapes brain networks through activity-dependent plasticity, including a weakening of recurrent cortical loops that could underlie its therapeutic effects.

New preprint + thread 🧵 #Psychedelics induce the formation of new synapses, but where do they connect? Our rabies tracing study reveals that #psilocybin shifts connectivity across specific cortical networks. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 1/12

Summary figure for study of psilocybin's effect on cortical network connectivity.

Excited to share our latest story! We found disentangled memory representations in the hippocampus that generalized across time and environments, despite the seemingly random drift and remapping of single cells. This code enabled the transfer of prior knowledge to solve new tasks
