in political discourse, the debate quickly shifts from whether being surrounded by inflated prices is bad, to whether you should be COMPLAINING. the goal becomes to *hack* “the way things are,” and tell others you’ve done it, rather than improve them.

for reasons that only make sense if you're insane, a TPUSA kid complaining about burrito costs on xitter has the GOP's biggest divas going for each other's throats.

One of our TPUSA college students gave me his take on affordability: “A burrito shouldn’t cost $20.” Yeah, a lot of this is a hangover from Covid and Biden-era inflation, but the lived experience is the same: It just feels like basic things cost too much.

I’ll argue millennial art-rock is often GOOD art-rock, if overrated by alt-rockers not inured to art-rock cliche. But it must have been hard for people with strong negative memories of Floyd, ELO & supertramp to deal with “oh wow, Wilco is making noise at the end of a ballad while looping NATO code”

I’ve cooled on Wilco & warmed to Blige considerably over the years, as emotional immediacy impresses more than effortful obscurity. But Wilco albums this era were consistently lovely if centered on a drip. Blige albums are often inconsistent if centered on a legend. In an LP battle…YHF.

I’m avoiding buying the marvel app cuz I know it will vacuum up my slightly classier audiobooking time. But I want to read this cuz my kid saw the phrase “age of apocalypse” on marvel puzzle quests a few years back & his imaginary heroes would say “I was fighting the age of apocalypse!” regularly.

Jon Stewart has been a heinous, embarrassing centrist many a time - iconic for it. But I’m grateful he has a wise-ass’ desire to not be a schmuck in public. These days a lot of comedians will die on a hill, silo their egos, but watching him reason with Fetterman, I see a guy who values *a clue*.

It’s funny how he’s oddly comparable to Clint Eastwood, who’d always have scenes in movies where people would crack hate jokes at each other before nodding with respect. This macho right to puerile bullying to weed out the vulnerable.

When artists who had a rough go of things for a while then seem to find a workable zone only to reveal they’re not gonna stay pleasant, be it boy George or cat power or whoever, I think of this wise bit from Christgau (who ironically enjoyed every cohen album after this one).

When I left monthly comics (basically with sandman 75, womp womp), Morrison, mid-invisibles, was all “oh I could rule superhero comics if I wanted to, maybe someday.” And while I don’t even remember this event, I remain in awe that gm is the one art freak who genuinely could & did become king shit.

Another thought: in his statement, Hank Green expressed quite a lot of shame about the "dopamine hit" he gets from using AI. As a non-AI user I don't really know what he's referring to here. Is the AI voice flattering him while also doing his job (presumably poorly)? Because that's big weird.
