The only point of money is the good it can do and the things it can buy. If you have hoarded so much of it that most of it will never be used to do anyone any good or buy anyone anything they need for the next 100 years, what on earth is the point of it?

Theodore Roosevelt once said republics rise, flourish, and fall because their citizens turn the government into a tool primarily to benefit one class instead of benefiting the people as a whole, and I think about what he said quite a lot.
It's a major failure of the national imagination that when confronted with the idea of a president who is equal parts venal, ignorant, and insane, it never occurred to us that many people's response would be to shrug.
We are taking this country apart, piece by piece. We destroy our health, we destroy our wealth, we destroy our security, we destroy our sanity. Winner gets all the ashes.
Teaching is an act of faith and hope. We plant our seeds and we water our gardens, but what grows there is often beyond our control. brokenhand.substack.com/p/the-cause-... #edusky

It shouldn't be that hard to build a society in which people are left alone to live their lives as they choose, as long as they don't infringe on other people's right to live their lives as they choose.
Dear Google; Grow a goddamn spine and provide factual information to your users. This is nonsense.
If you have more money than you could ever use in your lifetime, but insist of grabbing more, you're a greedy bastard. If you have more money than your family could ever use, unto 10 generations, but you insist if grabbing more, you're a sociopath.
Dolly was a better model of what a Christian and an American should be than Donald will ever be.
In a world full of the destructive kookiness of people like RFK Jr, strive to fill it with a little of the restorative kindness of Dolly Parton.
Reminder: Dolly Parton helped fund the Moderna vaccine for COVID.
Donald Trump longs for the day-- and is working to achieve the day-- when he no longer has to worry about his approval ratings or what any court says is legal or illegal.
@mrbrettgoldstein.bsky.social Thank you for the Pinter pause joke in today's new episode. One for the theater kids, with no explanation offered for anyone who didn't get it. Respect.
The shame of this age is our willingness to let Ukraine bleed and bleed and bleed, when we could have stood firmly and unequivocally with them, united with other countries, to force Russia to retreat.
Government doesn't have to be divisive, corrupt, oppressive, and self-seving. Focus on the people modeling genuine public service and love of community. They're out there. We'll only deserve more of them if we demand (and elect) more of them.
If you want them to care about what you teach, you need to care so much more: embarrassingly more, nerdily more. Cool detachment gains you nothing. #edusky www.nytimes.com/2026/08/17/o...

The number of eager, willing, slavish sycophants this alleged land of the free and home of the brave has belched forth to serve the most moronic and peevish of autocrats is really depressing
It's very hard to make a rule or a law so airtight that no shameless asshole could ever take advantage of it. That's why civic virtues and cultural values matter.
You cannot build your country to greatness while looting its assets for personal profit. This shouldn't be so hard to understand.

Can you really call it incompetence when they never had any intention of doing things competently?
The combination of gutless, greedy, cruel, stupid and crazy people running this country is astonishing.
We are the lotus-eaters. We have sailed far from the home. We have drifted at sea and neglected to tell the old stories of home to our children. We indulge in pleasures and we forget. And forgetting, we drift further and further back into the dark ages our ancestors fought so hard to emerge from.
