Welcome to The Beat's first official shot at a Year's Best list dedicated to the under-18 crowd: The Beat's Best Kids Comics of 2025. In any year there is a deluge of great comics and it can be bewildering to filter through them all, then narrow those titles down to a small list. Herein our contributors brought together over 20 titles we loved that can be enjoyed by kids AND adults.

I just finished reading this and... the character designs... the societal norm-challenging sweetness... the beauty and colors... the women... losing my bird loving mind. each page was a masterpiece ! such a wonderful book to gift any kid (or nature loving adult) wow

Next up, the Great Sorceress, keeper of magical mysteries and bearer of tremendous magical abilities... And her little apprentice. Will Chiqui ever be able to measure up to her grandmother? Maybe one day. First things first though, she's got to keep working on that transformation spell.

This is a tribute to Peter Benchley, author of 'Jaws', who dedicated his life to reversing the unexpected negative impact his book had on the image of sharks. We kill millions of sharks annually and demonize them in our media, who is the real monster? 💀 #Jaws #sharks #shark

An allegory of the "Jaws" movie poster that caused damage and negative stereotypes to the image of sharks that persist to this day (I'm glad it's slowly changing, but it's still too slow to be considered forgivable). Now with a reversal of roles, with the human victim replaced by a simple wild shark and the terrible stereotyped shark replaced by a monstrous human skull seeming to want to devour the shark (this is the reality, we kill thousands of sharks every year, many of them killed for irrational reasons, who is the real cruel killer?)

I've MANY feelings about the state of trad publishing for comics, most of which are angsty & fill me w/ dread. So I'll just say: If you read a book you loved, tell the creator! Tell your friends! Tell the internet! Tell your local library! Buy a copy! We need to hear that what we created matters.

Something I wasn’t prepared for is how much *audacity* it takes to be an author—or even an artist—in publishing. You gotta be ready to pitch yourself to anyone at any time, arrange & set up your own events, build your own hype, all while burying your insecurities. It’s a shockingly extroverted job.
