Cool news! A network of smart people in ON/QB won a huge grant to set up a global environmental humanities network for critical perspectives on climate politics and sustainability. We'll be recruiting a PhD student at Trent soon with a nice pot of funding :) sshrc-crsh.canada.ca/en/competiti...

A lovely way to spend your evening would be to curl up with your knitting/physiotherapy exercises/cat (yes I am getting old) and get all the gossip on Hamilton's data centre moratorium campaign. These organizers got further than anyone else in Canada has yet + have a ton of great lessons to pass on.
The datacentre debate is spreading across Canada. Are you a city councillor wondering what you can do to protect your community. Or maybe a very cool person who wants to stop one or more datacentres?
Join us, with @nrindernann.bsky.social, @apasek.bsky.social and more friends for a tactical dive into what went down in Canada's first datacentre battleground. Monday July 27 | 7-8pm est Zoom: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

Reminder that Carney has cut funding for Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Indigenous and Northern Affairs, and Indigenous Services. And he has rolled back climate protections, abandoned emissions targets, and is building more pipelines.

Do I happen to know someone (or someone who knows someone) interested or involved in resisting data centre developments in Toronto?
After spending time in Montreal and Berlin I have come to the opinion that it is extremely reasonable to get a bunch of black line tattoos. I have started collecting ideas in a little folder full of jpegs, as one does. But I think I need a new folder for this one.

I helped a little bit with this, and while it's written for a settler audience it's still useful for Indigenous Peoples too. If there's interest maybe we can do a version that's more focused on Indigenous perspectives / rights / concerns etc. In the meantime I'll keep an eye out for other stuff

I've got an op-ed in the Globe today with @nicktsergas.ca. We're thinking about how Hamilton's movement towards a data centre moratorium could snowball across Canada and help reset the way data centres + cities interface in the future. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/com...

Hamilton council voted 15–1 to stop datacentre development while the city writes regulations for the facilities. @apasek.bsky.social and I think it isn't really a Hamilton story. Hamilton is the first domino in an urgent national conversation. gift: www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/1c12514... #HamOnt
