We absolutely should be horrified by reports of planned public executions and see them as an overt re-embrace of spectacle lynchings--while also understanding that the story of the "modern" death penalty in this country is inextricable from that history, rooted in racial violence & white supremacy.

Alabama’s Lynching Memorial and the Legacy of Racial Terror in the South

At the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, the historical link between lynching and the death penalty is hard to miss.

People are also conflating "the internet" with "social media." The internet was email, irc, usenet, web sites, and other open protocols. "Social media" is a bunch of digital Skinner Boxes created by advertising companies. You used to click on a website, giggle at the jokes, and move on with life.

i especially love all the dopes saying “when the internet first went mainstream everyone hated it too” like it happened in the pioneer days so no one can dispute it, like mf’ers we were THERE

If there is someone at your workplace who sends out info about tips and tricks, finds free training, answers questions, or otherwise puts people on game, you should thank them sometimes. People often hoard information that may give them an advantage.

I just looked at the NYT website for the first time in a while and omg what did they do to their design?! 🫥 The typographical contrast of headlines and slugs is so weak and all | these | lines | everywhere. Maybe it looks weird because all the ads are blocked, but it just has no heft anymore. 👎🏾

This. When “frontier” started getting deployed in context of AI, I thought “Were there no humanities majors in the room?” Maybe some marketing team thought it romantically evoked pushing boundaries/space exploration. But it also connotes lawlessness, exploitation of people and resources, even death.

Also, all this “frontier AI” nomenclature is so laughably colonialist that it has to be on purpose. 🙄

Folks seem real comfortable calling a Black woman professor stupid when what she says doesn’t validate their priors. It’s particularly rich in this case since the respondent seems to confuse denotation and connotation. Anyway, this was an easy block. I hope they work on themselves.

No this is stupid. "Frontier" was specifically used colonially because it defined indigenous people as outside the bounds of civilization. Unless "frontier Al" is excluding some set of Al, it's not colonialist.

Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal and his government has committed genocide in Gaza. The United States should stop all military assistance to Israel. Saying this is not antisemitic. (I’m Jewish, by the way.)
