Liliana Segura@lilianasegura.bsky.social · 4d agoWhen our car was stolen out of our driveway in the pandemic summer of 2020, the sum total police response was for a cop to enter our house unmasked, shrug that the car would likely turn up somewhere (it was not) and, upon examining my spouse’s expired license, telling him he could arrest him for it.
Being a victim of crime shatters any illusions people have about what copaganda claims policing will do v. how the system actually works. Inaction—via a ton of exhausting bureaucracy and institutional betrayal—is the norm.
My formative interaction with police was during my first months in New York, when I lived in Queens. A roommate was ODing and I, in my ignorance, instinctively looked for a cop. I ran outside and saw one standing on the corner. I explained the situation. "Well," replied the cop, "she's an adult."

This is something defense attorneys deal with in a daily basis. Prosecutors charge shit cases all the time and clients get arrested and held in custody. Even a short stay in jail can destroy a person's life, but the system is entirely indifferent to that. Then, six months later, they drop charges.

As if the terror and wide-scale publicity of an arrest and federal prosecution is not a horrible punishment in and of itself.
