The rain had slicked his dark hair and drenched his clothes; they clung to him as if he and they were sculpted from the same piece of marble. The lingering embers in Rolfe began to crackle. “Come in, then,” he instructed, gesturing for Erryn to close the door behind himself and join him. “Sit by the stove. I’ve avoided your death once today already—I’ll not have you cross me by contracting some grievous cold.”
Erryn closed the stable door and followed Rolfe into the little kitchenette. There was a two-person table, cabinetry, and a charcoal stove for heating meals. Coals still burned from Rolfe’s earlier dinner. Rolfe pulled the chairs to sit in front of the stove, and together they took their places. Rolfe himself had been thoroughly doused by the rain, and he held his hands out to regain some warmth.
Despite the cramped space, Erryn felt that he had regained the ability to breathe. “Thank you,” he said coarsely.

QUERY

Itotia, a healer’s apprentice struggling to meet her mentor’s expectations, sees visions when she touches others. She believes it’s a sign of possession—an omen warranting exile or death—until her attempted banishment ritual truly binds her to the god she calls on. But the moon deity, Metztli, is self-serving and nothing like who Itotia thought she worshipped.

Metztli, the exiled moon deity, has been confined to the human realm for showing emotion. They bargain with the wicked gods: Metztli will deliver unknowing Itotia to the divine realm in exchange for a broken bond and their returned seat in the sky.

The two can hardly get through a conversation, let alone a tethered line of thought. They begin to relish how Itotia challenges them, just as Itotia starts to admire the way Metztli defines a being’s worth. Itotia’s determination to excel is engulfing, and soon, Metztli’s certainty in the irreversible bargain morphs into dread for the day Itotia discovers it.

Perhaps that was the reason they mistook us for desiring hand-carved trinkets and the cacao beans that splattered on the jungle floor with as much allure as the droppings of a bird. Through all the glares and angered roars, I held my attention on only one form: a narrow-framed shaman with a bloodied cheek the perfect echo of mine. Beautiful as she was, she would be my death.
