BREAKING: After 28 months of contract negotiations and a 12 day strike, the Seattle Art Museum and SAM VSO Union have reached a tentative agreement

SEATTLE ART MUSEUM (SAM) AND VSO UNION REACH TENTATIVE AGREEMENT December 11, 2024 SEATTLE – As of December 10, 2024, the Seattle Art Museum and the SAM VSO Union have reached a tentative agreement on terms for the Parties’ first collective bargaining agreement. The Museum and the Union are proud to have reached strong terms that reflect the Museum’s values and will improve working conditions for all VSOs. The Union bargaining team has recommended its members vote YES on ratification. Union Statement: Bargaining a first contract can be a stressful and arduous endeavor for all those involved, but especially so for a scrappy, independent union like the SAM VSO Union. Despite the many challenges we have faced since bargaining commenced over 28 months ago, the Union remained steadfast in its commitment to securing a first contract that our members would be proud of. We fought hard at the table to win back the retirement benefit that the VSOs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also secured a strong union security clause that will ensure a robust and healthy Union well into the future, but also includes an alternative for those already employed at SAM who may wish to abstain from Union membership. These meaningful wins are due in large part to the VSOs’ courage and commitment to improve the bargaining unit’s terms and conditions of employment at SAM for years to come. While we did not secure all the improvements we had hoped for, the Union was able to secure a number of wage and benefit improvements that went far beyond what SAM leadership initially offered. As such, we are appreciative of the compromises that SAM leadership made to get us to where we are today. We will continue to represent and advocate for a strong unionized security department at SAM, and we will continue to fight for improved workplace conditions for us all. “When we fight, we win!”

SAM Statement: Throughout the bargaining process, SAM has been committed to reaching an agreement that reflects our values, demonstrates our dedication to our people, and enables the museum to fulfill its mission. The deal we reached accomplishes those goals, including market-leading wages for union members and robust benefits that recognize the unique services provided by our colleagues. We have also centered ensuring that wherever possible, we improved benefits for all employees. We also committed to transparency and candor, and to provide timely, accurate information during bargaining, and we fulfilled that promise as well. This contract reflects thoughtful compromises from both the union and the museum, which is how the bargaining process is intended to work. “I am grateful to the bargaining teams from SAM and the VSO Union who committed their time, energy and passion to reach a contract we can all be proud of,” said Scott Stulen, SAM’s Director and CEO. “This contract addresses the unique working conditions of VSOs and the important services they provide, while maintaining our commitment to equity across the staff. It’s also a critical step so we can continue our focus on making SAM a welcoming, inclusive and inspiring place for all our employees and guests. We’re excited to welcome back our colleagues and move forward together.”

The growth has accelerated rapidly and taken on a more uniformly beige coloring by October 10

By October 21, the growth resembles overlapping stacks of pancakes, or a tan-and-cream-colored coral reef, or bouquet of caramel carnations

Also taken October 21, this angle shows another type of fungus, which resembles clumps of pale yellow spheres like oversized lemon dip n' dots, growing on the stump alongside and between several layers of the pancake-y one
