yup. unrestricted internet access is what allowed me to learn who i am, while being stuck in an environment that was extremely hostile to the idea. its also what made me who i am, in a way, and i don’t have a single regret about it either. it’s what saved me from becoming a bigoted idiot, really.

yes, having an Atmosphere OS with native ATProto account support is extremely cool and all but at the end of the day the only practical difference from an app-based solution is that you for some reason solidify that as a part of the OS that is way harder to modify or configure
Astra ⭐@astrra.space · 4d agomy room-temperature take is that you don't need a custom ROM to do this the same end result can be accomplished on stock android with an on-device "account vault" style app using a common API to communicate with other apps that support that SSO schema, no system access or custom ROM required
vendors want to lock you into their SSO scheme only because they want to extract revenue from you. if you're already having to modify every client app to support your new SSO schema, make it work on the app layer, don't become another vendor for no reason.
Astra ⭐@astrra.space · 4d agoat the end of the day, you shouldn't need a Google OS, or an Apple OS, or an Atmosphere OS, because that's not what the OS should do. an OS is a blank page for you to do anything you want, not something that paints you into a single cage, even if the protocol of the cage itself is open.

Astra ⭐@astrra.space · 4d agoto be a bit blunt, thinking that your phone needs a single "main" account to work is extremely corpo-brained. it doesn't need to ask you for an account during first setup, it doesn't need to have an account at all. you can just do things, already.
see those DAVx⁵ items? that's an app that connects to my own server and syncs my calendars, contacts, todo items, etc. that's my "identity layer" that all the calendar apps already hook into natively, no system modification or custom support required. and i can choose to change it at any moment.
Astra ⭐@astrra.space · 4d agoto elaborate on this a bit more my phone OS has no big single account with a profile picture at the top of the settings list it has an Accounts section, where each app can do its own thing, and google is just one if the items in the list (email hidden for privacy) that's how it should be

Astra ⭐@astrra.space · 4d agoin short, i don't believe that your OS needs an identity layer in the first place leave that job to the apps running on top of the OS, don't lock users' choice into a single set of valid options
