#ArtistFaveAlbumTrax - #EastBay Indie edition #MusicChallenge Track 5: "I Drew a Line" Madeline Kenney (Oakland) from A NEW REALITY MIND (2023) #dreampop #artrock Kenney has so many strong options, I had to figure out most of the other track numbers before I could figure out where to slot her in.

#ArtistFaveAlbumTrax - #EastBay Indie edition #MusicChallenge Track 4: "Wifi Beach" Brijean (Oakland at the time, but now Los Angeles 😞) from FEELINGS (2021) #electronic #indiepop #disco I always say this album is the musical manifestation of a warm Saturday afternoon with friends at Lake Merritt.
I think the only people I would have had earnest “who is better, Placebo or Squirrel Nut Zippers” conversations with in 1996 are all participating in this poll

#7DeadlySins #MusicChallenge Day 3 - Lust "You Lust," The Flaming Lips In the context of the song, it's a lust for success, which is probably more pride or greed, but whatever. It's a good, creepy-ass, 10-minute song.
Covered this in my Regional Transportation class and, yeah, it makes for a good story, but a whole bunch of streetcar lines that GM didn't own also got shut down at roughly the same time, which points to the fact that the companies had simply become unprofitable and couldn't maintain infrastructure.
Did GM buy the streetcars in San Francisco?

#MusicChallenge @newmusicchallenges.bsky.social Hello there, my fellow music-obsessed friends. I invite you to join me from August 1st through August 7th for a mini-challenge called #7DeadlySins. Just simply post a song that pertains to the "sin." Take care & hope to see you there!
Andrew Bird with the San Francisco Symphony. Magical show. Performed THE MYSTERIOUS PRODUCTION OF EGGS in its entirety. Really really glad we went. The guy has talent!

#5CoverSongsTribute #MusicChallenge Day 5 "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," Uncle Tupelo feat. Joe Ely (covering Waylon Jennings) A bonus track from ANODYNE'S 2003 reissue, a year after Waylon's death. It also pays tribute to Hank Williams, of course, and guest vocalist Ely left us in 2025.

#5CoverSongsTribute #MusicChallenge Day 4 "Well May the World Go," John McCutcheon feat. Hot Rize (covering Pete Seeger) From an entire album of songs by Seeger, whom McCutcheon calls a "friend and mentor." All the more poignant for being a song about your hopes for the world after you're gone.
As we pay our final respects to the covered artists during the final day of #5CoverSongsTribute, my co-hosts and I invite you to join us next month for #5CoverSongsOdds. You don't have to be odd to participate (but it helps!), just prep some cover songs that reference odd numbers.
Pour one out for #5CoverSongsHues, because it's time to move on and get your affairs in order for #5CoverSongsTribute. The only rule is the song has to originally be by an artist who is no longer with us. Join us for the final five days of July!

#5CoverSongsTribute #MusicChallenge Day 3 "They Don't Know," Lydia Loveless (covering Kirsty MacColl) It's likely that Loveless, like most of us, was more familiar with Tracey Ullman's charting version, but whatever. I am choosing to believe that Loveless was honoring the memory of MacColl.

Big vindication for my theory that every horse is just a projection of a single horse across infinite probabilities, and some sort of space-time fissure is causing them to appear in our universe as the barriers between quantum realities break down.
TikTok has incredible moderation team. Our InfoWars video about Multiple Horse Theory — the idea that there are many horses in the world and not just one — has been fully deemed misinformation and lost the formal appeals process. Confirmed by Larry Ellison: There is only one horse on Earth.

#5CoverSongsTribute #MusicChallenge Day 2 "Nod Over Coffee," Pierce Pettis (covering Mark Heard) Pettis was on stage performing with Heard when the producer/songwriter had a heart attack. He died a few weeks later. Ever since, Pettis has made it his mission to keep his friend's legacy alive.

I don’t know how many times—twice a week for months—I walked past this thing outside the Veterans Memorial Building in Oakland before I stopped to read what it is. It’s a torpedo port from the USS Maine, the battleship whose mysterious sinking in 1898 precipitated the Spanish-American War.

#5CoverSongsTribute #MusicChallenge Day 1 "Stormy Weather," Reigning Sound (covering Ethel Waters) I gave myself a bonus challenge of only selecting covers released *after* the original artist's death. In this case, Greg Cartwright's garage-rock version came out 25 years after Waters passed.
And here are my 50 honorable mentions for #TheN0ughtie5 (including the 5 HMs I posted at the end of June).
#TheN0ughtie5 Day 50 12 POINTS 1. “This Year” The Mountain Goats 2005 Single ❌ JCC ✅ NKC ❌ Saving my 12-pointer for my third non-single. My mother requested this at a campfire singalong a few weeks ago, which I think is the primary measure for when a song has achieved iconic status.
