Someone heard a thing somewhere, maybe, and someone famous repeated it, and then someone reported what the famous person said, and flocks now quote it as fact and reorganize their lives around the thing

Max Miller is part of the Ratner family, and went to this school (as did my son), which just announced its closing. No connection I’m sure but weird to have so much east side CLE news at once

For years I’ve thought about taking a Cunard transatlantic cruise to Europe b/c throwback glamor to it, and they are on sale right now. Anyone want to tell me this is a terrible idea (I’m not a cruise person, never been on one, but a ship that crosses the Atlantic?) or that, actually, it’d be cool?

I am reading The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher and it’s insanely good
I live in an apartment building that has high rent for the area. We have a free table and everything people put on it is really junky. Same with the furniture they sell when they move. I’m always kinda shocked. Maybe the cheap stuff poster is right.
At this gathering we could discuss the spectre of writers and readers turning into cops re AI. I would open the conversation by saying I don’t think it’s good! ACAB!
Holy fuck just learned Max Miller went to *both* of the schools my son did (and one, Ratner, just announced it is closing)
Only a teensy tiny fraction of books are truly rare, unique, or scarce. But the idea that people destroy the 1,921st copy of a book no one is interested in always freaks people out. They are appalled that libraries weed books, too.

This is kinda funny b/c it’s about how reading is back b/c ticket sales for events are up. Reading and going to an event aren’t the same thing (as I often explain when I decline to attend events b/c I’d rather read lol)

scott b. weingart@scottbot.net · 7d agoCopyright laws, digital distribution deals, & publishing monopolies are the reason destructive book scanning is putting books at risk. I get why folks are angry at AI companies buying books to destroy them. However, these issues predate them and hang a lot on books being subject to "market forces."
