Someone heard a thing somewhere, maybe, and someone famous repeated it, and then someone reported what the famous person said, and flocks now quote it as fact and reorganize their lives around the thing

you never expect the morning paper to tell you tomatoes are carnivores 😱https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/science/darwin-was-right-these-plants-are-carnivores.html?unlocked_article_code=1.3FA.Tjj-.zGmeh6HW5gYB&smid=nytcore-ios-share

tomorrow's newsletter will be links related to publishing (broadly construed). I avoid takes most have probably seen (canceled book deals b/c AI, rare books & AI) and focus on easier to miss pieces. Send me links (even if your own)? (People really like these roundups so I want to make them better)

For years I’ve thought about taking a Cunard transatlantic cruise to Europe b/c throwback glamor to it, and they are on sale right now. Anyone want to tell me this is a terrible idea (I’m not a cruise person, never been on one, but a ship that crosses the Atlantic?) or that, actually, it’d be cool?

Recently I was trying to decide who the people I most admire are, and I settled on readers, esp those of difficult books (broadly construed), who do not read as part of their job or side hustle, but as a way of life, a hobby, a life of the mind. Some of you are on here and I see you 🫡

I live in an apartment building that has high rent for the area. We have a free table and everything people put on it is really junky. Same with the furniture they sell when they move. I’m always kinda shocked. Maybe the cheap stuff poster is right.

At this gathering we could discuss the spectre of writers and readers turning into cops re AI. I would open the conversation by saying I don’t think it’s good! ACAB!

This is kinda funny b/c it’s about how reading is back b/c ticket sales for events are up. Reading and going to an event aren’t the same thing (as I often explain when I decline to attend events b/c I’d rather read lol)

The end point of these discussions of AI & writing & books are questions like “What is an individual?” and “What is originality?“ and luckily some of us spent decades reading dense theory so we can answer these questions! (No one will like the answers though)
