So many films that try to do the "Well what do YOU think it's about?" thing are just masking a fundamental insecurity in their craft. They're films about nothing trying to get us to do the work for them. This film? This is Lynch at the peak of his multivalent powers. We will never find the bottom.

There is no real "Aha!" moment of solving the mystery. You go deeper and deeper until you find the meaning that personally feels right to you.
There's an entire documentary about James Hetfield inflicting his "bullshit" on his bandmates and the tension that causes but sure, yeah, whatever you say buddy.
