The eagerness of the court's conservatives to grant Trump the assumption of good intentions even when he's issuing blatantly unconstitutional orders and PUBLICLY SAYING that he has the worst of intentions shows their hands. It's Calvinball all the way down.

What if, hear me out, the reason for ideological imbalances at universities is that right wing views are so often anti-factual, pumped up with lies, and empirically proven to be detrimental? What if that's the reason better educated people tend to reject them...and that they are more liberal?

To be less cheeky about it, Daniels has been in the tank for doing affirmative action for conservatives for a while. But it turns out that doesn't matter, since the radicalized Republican Party has been stewing in hate against higher ed since 1951, & is now realizing its dreams of destroying it.

Ronald J. Daniels, the president of Johns Hopkins University, which receives the most federal funding of any American university, has been listening. For years, he has been warning that higher education should make efforts to attract more conservatives to the ranks. His school has pushed for more viewpoint diversity and has touted a partnership with the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. Those efforts do not appear to have protected the university. Johns Hopkins, the first research university in the United States, has been one of the hardest hit by a Republican effort to reduce federal funding flowing to schools.

Terrific take on the intellectually bankrupt use of "both sides" by the lazier members of the corporate media.

There’s no clean way to hive off terms like “fascism” or “authoritarianism” from Trump’s policies. Even if you disagree that the words apply, their use is backed up by a genuine attempt at intellectual justification for it. The use of these terms just is deeply linked to assessments of Trump’s actual policies, from the lawless renditions to foreign gulags to the unleashing of heavily-armed militias in American cities to the naked intimidation of large swaths of civil society. By contrast, when Trump and MAGA media figures call Democrats “communists” or “antifa,” all of that is entirely disconnected from any policy realities. Many press figures would like it if there were an Archimedean midpoint between the two parties on all these matters. But there isn’t. At the most basic level, one party continues to function as an actor in a liberal democracy, whereas Trump and much of his movement, with the eager participation of many Republicans, simply do not. Dispensing with harsh but accurate descriptions of his real goals would whitewash them.

If a powerful and evil person reviled my colleagues, and dehumanized them, and said they should be executed for treason, and I went and broke bread with that person at an event to promote and celebrate and normalize him, I would be a shitty person, and I hope people would be shitty to me.
