From playing to 100,000 in Montreal to 500 in Vancouver for a highly coveted club gig, I can honestly say that Gatineau’s newfound celeb alt weirdos @anginedepoitrine.bsky.social were 1000% musically impressive and 100% ridiculously fun at the tiny, packed and sweltering Pearl #anginedepoitrine

Mikala (Mih-Kay-La, She/Her). I created music memoir site BackstageRider.com (which got hacked & I need to rebuild it but am alive on socials @backstagerider). I am a 🇨🇦🇩🇰Music-Obsessed-Writer-Photog-GigGoer-Pagan-Goth-Spoonie-Foodie-Traveller-Settler.🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🍉🧡✊🏿🤘🏼
Absolutely WILD lightning storm for HOURS tonight in #Vancouver. These used to be rare, but this one is like a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic level badass. You can even see the thing fade. My whole ‘hood gasped.
@johnbiehler.bsky.social sorry we didn’t get a chance to chat! I looked up and the day had gone, lost to catch ups with Vish and Jason et al, but always lovely to see you 🤘🏼❤️
In other news, I really should share my incredibly aggrieved rental dog Lily (I’m her aunt) who has ISSUES with not getting enough attention, gets sidetracked by a bird, then returns to the aforementioned ISSUES. Worth watching sound up for the entire duration of despair, trust me #dogsofbluesky
I haven’t been on for a long while but I really miss the other place (when it was good) cos when I was struggling I would just come on and vent into the dark and voices would answer. Well friends, things are rough again. But onward march, all we can do!
Some shots I snagged at a rather lively and lovely Matt Berninger (of The National) solo gig recently here in Vancouver, BC at the always-lovely Orpheum. 🤘🏼
Matt Berninger of the National doing a cover of….Blue Monday?? Yes! What an awesome treat. His baritone makes me think he could handle a Joy Division / Ian Curtis role beautifully
@amandaonmaui.bsky.social hi luv, hope you two are ok. Are you ok after the storm? It took out a street in Kihei near where we used to stay!! Wow. Miss you guys xx
Gutted for my partner. He has spent the entire holiday doing family stuff, looking after his mom with dementia, having to hang with my mom, and finally gets 2.5 days to himself to relax …and now has a bad round of gastroenteritis. I feel so bad for the guy. Praying also I don’t get it but man
Hi, it me. If it you also, I send spoons for 2026.
New Years can be hard when you’re chronically ill People are setting goals for the upcoming year… and many of us can’t participate Our goal is to survive & lessen suffering If all you did in 2025 was survive, that’s ok It’s ok if that’s your goal for 2026 too Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise
I am west coast. But did the east coast NYC ball drop with my mom who also turns 82 on NY Day. Chugged a couple of fizzy dranks, had some sushi, home by 10:30, perfect and old. I may hate New Year’s but love to you all. May the year usher in more kindness. A fool’s hope, but a hope nonetheless.
Thrilled to celebrate the one and only incredible researcher, journalist, kind soul and my unwaveringly unique and inspiring pal @nardwuarserviette.bsky.social on his Order of Canada! He is the best of us. (Ps that first image is us at Halloween)
@raffic.bsky.social congrats on the GG Award! So very well deserved - and finally! Much love and happy new year!
We turfed our Disney+ sub during the Kimmel thing and it expires next week so we’re watching Andor. Holy fuck is it like watching courderoy. It’s so bad.
Awwwwww I didn’t know they were closing! This place IS truly amazing. My friend was the GM there and I hung with Sebadoh there too. A real rock n’ roll motel for sure. That’s such a bummer, but glad we were able to have the experience there, Wayne! Love to you 🤘🏼
Last go round at the Phoenix Hotel, before they close after New Year’s 😢 So many memories… Special shoutout to Mikala @backstagerider.bsky.social for the suggestion many years ago. Truly a home away from home.
I’m finding it virtually impossible to do more than an hour of work without crawling back into bed in this dark and wet November. Anyone else? Like, I legit am fighting off the AhFuckits so hard
I - a Gen X goth - went to the East Van Opry last night. Huge talent on stage but these guys were the best because I imagined them actually as Emmett Otter’s Jug Band from The Muppets and that tickled me even more
Mikala gets very excited in mushroom season. Rosy slime spikes I have been told #mushroomsky
I learned yesterday that my rental dog will cut a bitch if you try take away this particular fish chew (to prevent her from choking as it got smaller). Tiny wolf in there omg.
Hanging out with the future leader of the NDP. Hear me out, Canada: Avi Lewis is actually planning to make some noise for the actual good of actual Canadians. It’s time to return to the party we know it can be, not the one it has been. There is change afoot.
Wait, what? How the fuck is it October?
I haven’t been on here a lot and I miss it! Been a draining *checks calendar to see how long* ….life
i’m so old, i remember when going on the internet made you smarter
Whoops I slept in until 9am. On a workday. 😂
@cityofvancouver.bsky.social what *is* the City’s tangible, practical, on-the-ground safety plan for tsunami warnings or impacts? Like, do we have signs, sirens, Parks Board patrolling beaches to keep ppl safe etc? Not talking about gov warnings. You’re not winging it, right? RIGHT?
IF you’re on the very West Coast of BC, in Hawaii and probably the US coast, THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE (8.7!!!) in the Bering Sea in Russia and we are all on Tsunami Advisories. My zone is close (tho tucked in in Vancouver) but not listed - but I live a block and a half from the water so EEP
